I am not yet even engaged, but I would really like to learn more about NFP before I even get to that point. Most of what I see is for couples, but I don’t understand why I cannot learn about my cycle and whatever without being married. I have every intention of going to my husband the virgin that I am, but I would like to be familiar with myself. Do I have to be a couple before I can learn?

no you don’t have to be a engaged or married to learn it but most Catholic NFP course, classes and teachers may want a medical reason for a single woman to join the class. **you can buy the book and teach yourself **or call and talk to a teacher and explain why you want to learn it. there are all kinds of self taught online info out there.

Read Taking Charge of Your Fertility. That was how I learned (I could never get DH into a class!).

Also, learning about NFP is a vital part of pre-Cana, which means you will have plenty of time to learn about it (and take the class) from the Catholic Couples League or another NFP organization. These classes are very thorough, and definitely prepare you. Since the classes involve such an emphasis on connection with your spouse, I would personally suggest waiting, but that is just my preference looking back.

Completely 100% disagree with waiting.

I’ve been charting for 10 years, single, for my health. In charting I discovered several health issues that I would not have found if I were not charting. It has empowered me to be in control of my health, as well as made me more in awe of God and His design. I believe EVERY SINGLE WOMAN should chart at the very latest, by the time they are 18.

It also took me awhile to learn because I had some health issues that made charting difficult…which were then diagnosed and treated, THEN I could actually learn the method as its supposed to go.

Nfpandmore.org has a manual that you can purchase and download. It’s very much set up to be a self-study course if you prefer to learn without an instructor at first.

I have to disagree. In my area, NFP is not mentioned at all in the pre Cana courses. Sadly, it is like that in many of the neighboring parishes around me as well. Most Catholics where I live still believe the only method of NFP available is the rhythm method.

As for waiting to learn, many women uncover health problems by charting that they would not have known about had they not been charting. I think it is very empowering for a woman to know how her own body works. I plan on teaching my daughter how to chart once she is a teen–I think it is a very important thing for a woman to understand about herself.

I was charting for about a year before we got pregnant.

“Taking Charge of Your Fertility” is a fabulous book and I learned about NFP before I came back to the church. It was a pleasant surprise to learn that the Catholic church advocates for NFP.
I thought to myself…hey! I already know how to do that! 😃

Don’t wait until you are married. Pick up a book, take a class and start charting ASAP. It will make the transition into your marriage so much smoother and you will be well prepared to either hold off on pregnancy or start working at pregnancy right away.

Thank you so much! I feel a little less strange now asking as a single woman, and I can definitely see where knowing about myself would help to uncover if there are any problems. I can also see where having this “down” when I get married would be a good thing.
