Ian Paisley softening toward the Church?

Wow. I wonder what that’s all about. It’s like Jack Chick meeting with a Catholic bishop. I’m interested in following this story as it develops. My Political Science advisor’s area of expertise was politics in Northern Ireland. His descriptions of the way Ian Paisley would mock the Eucharist in particular and Catholicism in general were always disturbing. How in the world did you get e-mails from him and what kinds of things did they say? Inquiring minds want to know! 😃

I emailed his website and he actually responded. It was a long time ago. I don’t recall what he said but it wasn’t flattering toward Catholicism. I was a rather inexperienced apologist at the time.

Just reading the article it seems the motives may be political on the surface, but to meet could have some religious significance too.
Pray for a most favorable outcome.

Sorry to post this…but really…who cares?

His opinion either way has nothing to do with either the faith in general, or my faith in particular? However, I would love to see everyone in the world brought into the faith, for THEIR salvation. My salvation has nothing to do with his opinion 🙂

I find it hard to believe that Ian Paisley is softening. This meeting is probably primarily political rather than a joyous attempt to develope mutual respect. Of course, with prayer and the working of God, anything is possible.

I’ve taken a look for evidence of softening from Ian Paisley’s web pages, specifically the top page. His web page is the home page of the “European Institute of Protestant Studies”. The main page states that “The Institute’s purpose is to expound the Bible, expose the Papacy, and to promote, defend and maintain Bible Protestantism in Europe and further afield.”

The main page then has a link to “5 reasons why Catholic is not Christian”, and links to sections called “Errors of Rome”, “Caustic Comments” (mainly about Catholicism), “History Lessons” (mainly about Catholicism), “Rome and Politics”, and “Contemporary Issues” (a large chunk of which are about Catholicism). The only section linked to there that focuses mainly away from criticising Catholicism is “Sword (Bible Doctrine)”

The mission Statement at the bottom of the page reads:
The Institute’s purpose is to expound the Bible, expose the Papacy, and to promote, defend and maintain Bible Protestantism in Europe and further afield.

It will assist all who are engaged in the struggle against the Papacy in both the religious and the secular worlds; provide courses suitable to all ages in the controversy with Rome; and supply information on all aspects of the Papacy today. It hopes to establish correspondents throughout the world so that it can give a global overview of the state of Protestantism. C.H. Spurgeon summed it up well in his article on Our Constant War With The Papacy.

Hmmm, not much evidence of softening there. But it has put me off Spurgeon a bit - as a protestant he was my favourite 19th century preacher.

His website remains the same but has he met with the Bishops yet? I’m just waiting to see what comes of this. He’s never even been open to meeting with Catholic clergy before, has he?

My favorite Ian Paisley story as related to me by a friend from Dublin:

There he was in his pulpit, with his sour face and scary teeth, giving a fire and brimstone sermon which he concluded with the line “…and there will be wailing and gnashing of teeth!”

A little old lady in the front row meekly asked “What if you don’t have any teeth?”

To which Mr. Paisley replied “Teeth will be provided!”

Note: this is actually funnier when done in a brogue.

😃 I love it! :rotfl:

Since both Britain and Ireland are heading in the direction of surrendering national sovereignty to the EU, Paisley’s politics will become increasingly irrelevant (not to deny the sincerity of his religion).

Who’s Ian Paisley, never heard of him ? 😉

When we had the mad cow disease here, beef was not moving at-all apart from being burnt.

We had to get out of our cars at the border and put our shoes in disinfectant until the scare was over, and vehicles had to be hosed down and disinfected.

Well for all his ranting that Ulster was British, and British beef wasn’t being eaten, suddenly Paisley changed his tune and said, “it’s not British beef, it’s Irish”. http://bestsmileys.com/clueless/1.gif

So there you have it folks, the people are British but the cows are Irish, oh well there you go, and sorry, no cows wer’e available for interview.🙂

Anyway he is softening in his old age, even sent condolences to Betrie Ahern on the death of those school children, changed times.

Yes,i remember that trick, trying to sneak the cows via the Republic.
It’s not that long ago he and his clan were singing hymns and telling people they were lost because there was a move afoot to introduce racing into Ulster.I can’t remember if it was because it was going to be held on Sundays,or if it was just the gambling they were objecting to.It’s ok for him to stop people in the street
and tell them what they are doing is wrong, but the Vatican will not tell him.

Strange. I didn’t realize the lead singer of Deep Purple was anti-Catholic. 😃

No, the lead singer of Deep Purple wasn’t Paisley, was it? First name Ian, but not Paisley. Can’t remember. I’ll go check my Jesus Christ Super Star CD.

Paisley, hmmm, are you sure?? Now it’s bugging me.

Just real quick so’s not to go off the subject - but I’m reminded there was some talk about Jack Van Impe converting. Anybody know anything new 'bout that?

I checked that out a few weaks ago. So far it is just a rumor. It was alleged that on April 24 he was going to anounce he was Catholic. But he is definitely soft toward the Church.
