GREELEY, Colo. (AP) - Federal agents raided meat processing plants in six states Tuesday and arrested an unknown number of suspected illegal immigrants in an identity theft investigation, temporarily suspending operations at all six plants. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials said the workers were being arrested on administrative immigration violations and, in some cases, criminal arrest warrants stemming from a nearly yearlong investigation

More power to ICE. They are doing a job to protect all of us.

One of the big issues here is the use of stolen social security numbers – that is, identity theft.

That is wrong by both secular standards and religious standards.

Good for ICE, now they should go after Swift for hiring them in the 1st place. They knew they had a lot illegals in their plants because they went to court to stop the raids. Some executives at Swift should be doing some hard time.

Here is a link to the story that says they went to court to stop the raids.

Great post.

I fully agree.

If at least some executives at Swift are sentenced to doing some hard time this would be a very good step to discourage employers from hiring illegal immigrants.

You are aware that these illegals had stolen the identities of American citizens and used them to get jobs. How is an employer to know if they presented valid ID’s and SS numbers?

Background checks are done on perspective employees all the time. It is a simple matter to check the validity of credentials of anyone.

Such a check would have quickly shown the credentials were not valid.

If the employer chooses not to check, they are liable IMO.

Do you want them to check everyone’s credentials, mine, yours, everyone on the forum. I don’t think that kind of job calls for a background check. Most jobs do not. Me thinks you just want to get a jab at business.

Certainly I believe the credentials for every new employee should be checked. That is just good business. It is not difficult to do.

Every employee is required to required to complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form. And their credentials must be submitted with that form. That is the law. That is the time to check.

Any employer who fails to do so is asking for trouble – and deserves it.

Forget background checks. Most people can’t read a background report anyway. Forget credentials for now. Let’s just do the voluntary Social Security number verification. Go here:

ssa.gov/employer/ssnv.htm

It’s all too easy. jt

And what are the credentials that should be submitted. If they present a SS card and say their name is _________, how can an employer know. SS cards do not tell the nationality of the person using it. These people that are in question used stolen identities, stolen SS cards. How can that be checked? Perhaps you know.

I know that a lot of employers look at and copy Driver’s Licenses, but those, too, are forged.
Perhaps you can clear this up for me.

There are a variety of ways to quickly and easily check the validity of credentials including social security numbers. Some are free and some charge a modest fee.

Hey_Jude has already posted one of the free methods in this thread in post # 10. It is offered by the Social Security Administration as ssa.gov/employer/ssnv.htm

If Swift did not know they had illegals working for them why did they go to court to try to stop the raids? Just for your info the company I work for does a background check on every employee. It just makes good sense, if a company hires a sexual predator and he molests someone at work the company will be held libal.

Boy, its so easy to jump on the bandwagon and blame the US employers for a failed immigration system.

#1 The only question that can be asked prior to a job offer is if the applicant is able to work legally in the US.

Since you can’t use a lie dector for this question, an employer has to take the applicant’s word on this.

#2 There are several different documents that can be submitted to satisfy the I-9 requirements prior to starting the job. You cannot ask for a specific document like a social security card or driver’s license although those are the 2 documents that most people provide. You could just as easily show a valid US passport to satisfy this requirement without ever showing a social security card.

#3 People do steal social security numbers from others or they just borrow and assume the identiy of someone that does have legal status.

I could give you a social security card of a real John Smith and tell you that I am John Smith and I have a very well made but fake drivers license showing my picture that says I am John Smith. You could verify that my social security number was real and belonged to John Smith all day and still I could get away with starting a job and not be John Smith

That’s all fine and dandy, but if the employer knowing skirts the law, as I believe happened in this case, they should be prosecuted don’t you think?

I agree, but it will never happen.

Your local liquor licensing authority provides training to spot fake ID’s. I’m not sure how they organize in all 50 states. Most states have a county authority for licensing liquor establishments. These agencies will provide detailed training and a manual for spotting fake ID’s. Costs vary. Some few illegals will always slip through. But, with a concerted effort on the employers part, it could be fewer. jt

Because any smart manager or any manager following the advice of a descent lawyer would advise such
