Icon question, Virgin of Extreme Humility

I’m hoping someone will be able to help me. There’s a gorgeous icon I came across recently, The Virgin of Extreme Humility.

I feel very drawn to this representation of Mary for whatever reason, and I was wondering if there are any devotions/prayers associated with this icon? On Wednesdays my parish does devotions to Our Lady of Perpetual Help which is something like 5-6 long prayers with a song at the end, so I was curious to know if there is anything like that for this icon.

TO THE BLESSED MOTHER FOR HUMILITY

O Mary, Mother of Mercy, pray to thy Divine Son for me, a poor sinner; beg Him to make me humble. Oh, how humble art thou, the purest of Virgins; thou, my powerful mediatrix; thou, O most holy among the children of Adam, who art the exalted Mother of God! Thou didst declare thyself the handmaid of Him Whose Mother thou art. Behold, my dear heavenly Mother, how gladly I would dedicate myself to thy Divine Son, that His Will may also be mine. But my pride, my self-esteem, my vanity, are always against me. I struggle against them, and yet I allow them to surprise and deceive me so often. Oh, how this afflicts me! Mary, Refuge of Sinners, if I were only sincere when I beg of thee to obtain humiliation for me. But alas, whilst praying for such helps to humility, I fear the granting of my prayer. I clearly see better things; I even desire their possession and yet I shrink from what alone can give me true humility. Behold my trials, my combats in this valley of tears! O my dearest Mother, if to be freed from this body would give glory to God, how gladly would I not lay down my life.
 
Yes, that is the famous miraculous icon of St Seraphim of Sarov called “The Mother of God, Joy of all Joys” and also “of tender feeling” (rather than “Extreme Humility” - which actually refers to an icon of Christ after His Crucifixion).

It is an icon of the annunciation of Our Lady, at the point when our Lord was incarnate by the Holy Spirit in her womb. The Mother of God is looking down into her heart in deep prayer and reflection (i.e.“she pondered all these things in her heart” etc.).

Devotions to this icon include the saying of 150 Hail Mary’s or the Rosary before it. In Russia, Orthodox monastics will often circumambulate around their monasteries reciting this prayer as it is done in the Monastery of Diveyevo where the original Icon is enshrined. It was before this icon that St Seraphim received the word from the Mother of God that the Rosary/rule of 150 Hail Mary’s is the most important devotion to obtain her protection over our lives.

St Seraphim’s other rule for busy laity laid out that the Our Father, Hail Mary are to be said three times each with the Creed said once. These seven prayers are to be said morning, noon and before retiring for the night. Until noon, one should say the Jesus Prayer quietly. After noon, one should invoke the Mother of God: i.e. “Most Holy Sovereign Mother of God, save me a sinner!” or else the Rule of 150 Hail Mary’s.

Another form of the Jesus Prayer St Seraphim recommended is: Lord Jesus Christ, by the Mother of God, have mercy on me a sinner.

St Seraphim kept a record near this icon with all the miracles people experienced by praying the Rosary/Rule of prayer of 150 Hail Mary’s daily. He prayed before this icon in the forest for 1,000 days and nights, kneeling on a large stone which is now gone because of all the chipping away done by pilgrims over the years.

Also, it is traditional to pray the Jesus Prayer before this Icon of the Face of the Most Holy Mother of God. Certainly, St Seraphim spent many hours and days and nights invoking the Name of Jesus before this icon.

There are special liturgical services to this icon, such as an akathist (or special, litany-like prayer with 144 invocations to her), but as yet there is no English translation as far as I know. I might just go ahead and do a translation.

The feastday of this Icon is Ausugst 2nd, I believe. Akathists, canons (another liturgical litany-like prayer) and supplicatory services are frequently prayed before this Icon.

Western Catholics may pray the Litany of our Lady before it, the Rosary, the Magnificat and also the Angelus (the Angelus need not only be said three times a day - St Louis IX King of France would recite the Angelus 50 times every night before retiring which would have made up 150 Hail Mary’s but with a greater devotional focus on the Annunciation.)

In addition, those who follow St Louis de Montfort’s Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary (as I do as well) can have this icon as their patronal icon for their devotion since Montfort wrote that the feast of the Annunciation is the proper feast for that devotion and this icon is an “Annunciation icon.” This icon can also serve as an Eastern “Icon of the Sacred Heart of the Most Holy Virgin Mary” since our Lady is looking into her Heart.

I will try and translate the Akathist to this icon into English and when I have, I’ll post it here.

When St Seraphim of Sarov died, he died on his knees in prayer before this icon. His body slumped over and his forehead came to rest on our Lady’s hands on the icon.

A fitting end to her great servant’s life on earth!

A very good question, not (and never) an ignorant one!

St Seraphim taught several prayer rules to his disciples/spiritual children of which the Rule of the Theotokos was one.

This is set up like the Rosary with fifteen “tenners” or “decades” each beginning with an Our Father and then the prayer “Open to us Thy mercy, O Blessed Theotokos, so that placing our hope in Thee we will not be lost, but so that we may saved from all evil, for Thou art the salvation of the Christian people!” The second Marian prayer may be said at the end of the ten Hail Mary’s following too - for me, it is good segway into the Hail Mary’s.

Then ten times the Hail Mary: “O Theotokos Virgin, rejoice Mary, full of grace, blessed are thou among women and blessed is the Fruit of thy womb, for Thou hast given birth to Christ the Saviour, the Redeemer of our souls.” (Other Orthodox renderings end with “to the Saviour of our souls”). If one is Western Rite Orthodox or Catholic, then the Hail Mary as you have given it above.

Very beautiful is the Ethiopian Hail Mary:

O Our Lady Virgin Mary, we hail Thee by the salutation of the Angel Gabriel. Thou are Virgin in spirit. Thou are Virgin in body. Hail Mary, Mother of Almighty God. Blessed art Thou among women and blessed is the Fruit of Thy womb. Rejoice Mary full of grace, the Lord is with Thee, Pray for us to your beloved Son, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, so that He may forgive us our sins, now and forever. Amen.

One may end with the Glory be to the Father and any other prayers one wishes.

Each decade/decima is in honour of one of the Mysteries of the life of Christ and the Theotokos - as an Eastern Catholic, I like the Western set and use the 20 Mysteries and add my own but also say the Mysteries as laid down by St Seraphim of Sarov and St Seraphim Zvezdinsky (shot by the bolsheviks in 1937).

Martin Luther’s Hail Mary which ends with “Jesus Christ” is an old Western form and words relating to the mystery can be added afterwards as set down in the 63 Hail Mary rosary of Schrocken in the Vorarlberg Alps that is said there to this day.

St Seraphim also prescribed the rule of the three Our Father’s, three Hail Mary’s and the creed once, to be said three times daily, interspersed with frequent Jesus Prayers and the shorter prayer to the Mother of God or else the Jesus Prayer with the “by the Mother of God” or “by the intercession of Thy most pure Mother.”

He laid down a much longer monastic rule for the nuns at Diveyevo with prostrations, longer forms of the Jesus Prayer, portions of the Psalms etc. He said that rule was given to him by the Mother of God herself and the rule recommended that the nuns conduct the “ceaseless Psalter” in their chapel with the ceaseless reading of the psalms, day and night, 24/7. Then there was the rule of 150 Our Father’s and 150 Hail Mary’s.

What the west calls the “rosary” (and in fact western Saints didn’t like that term but preferred the “psalter of our Lady”) is the Rule of the Theotokos.

I found this prayer on the Antiochian website; it doesn’t give any information on it’s history, but it seems like a good prayer to say:

"PRAYER BEFORE THE IKON OF THE THEOTOKOS

Forasmuch as thou art a well-spring of tenderness, O Theotokos, make us worthy of compassion; Look upon a sinful people; Manifest thy power as ever, for hoping on thee we cry aloud unto thee: Hail! as once did Gabriel, Chief Captain of the Bodiless Powers."

"In hope of shedding some light on the subject, we publish the following letter of Father Alexander Gumanovsky, a spiritual son of Father Zosima, who was himself a spiritual son of St. Seraphim of Sarov. Fr. Alexander begins his letter with a quote from Fr. Zosima:

…I forgot to give you a piece of advice vital for salvation. Say the “0 Hail, Mother of God and Virgin” one hundred and fifty times, and this prayer will lead you on the way to salvation. This rule was given by the Mother of God herself in about the eighth century, and at one time all Christians fulfilled it. We Orthodox have forgotten about it, and St. Seraphim has reminded me of this Rule. In my hands I have a hand-written book from the cell of St. Seraphim, containing a description of the many miracles which took place through praying to the Mother of God and especially through saying one hundred and fifty times the “O Hail, Mother of God and Virgin.” If, being unaccustomed to it, it is difficult to master one hundred and fifty repetitions daily, say it fifty times at first.
