i just bought one of those small folding icons. at first I thought it was Our Lady of perpetual help but I noticed that mine has Mary holding Jesus to the left whereas Our Lady of perpetual help has her holding Him to the right. Anyone know what icon this is? Is it OLPH?

I doubt that the direction in which Our Lady is holding Jesus is what matters - what about the rest of the picture?

Are there the two angels with Jesus and Mary, one holding the Cross, the other a spear and another stick (meant to represent the sponge with which Jesus was given to drink on the Cross)? Is Mary holding both of Jesus’ hands? Is one of Jesus’ sandals falling off? These would make it OLPH.

ICONS MOTHER OF GOD

There are many icons of Mother of God based on Odigitria which in general have Mother of God holding Our Lord Jesus Christ in left arm. These include Skoroposhlusnitsa (quickly obedient) and Strastnaja (with angels hold instruments of Passion - Strast’). None of these names seem to translate to English Perpetual Help. Perhaps this is name given to Strastnaja Ikona in America. But Icons with Child Jesus Christ on right arm are fewer but including

(most famous) Vladimirskaja Ikona
Donskaja Ikona
Pochaevskaja Ikona
Feodorovskaja Ikona

Because most famous is Vladimirskaja I show below:

I love the Vladimirskaja

Our Lady of Perptual Help, though, is definitely one with the instruments of the Passion (Strastnaja), and it is a Western name given to a particular one of this type that was found in Rome (I think originally Greek). Here is a picture of OLPH.

the angles are not there but I think that part is cut off. i see the letters:

she is holding jesus with both hands and jesus is touching her chin. From the viewers point of view, Jesus is on left. On the left panel there is some angel, and on the other pannel ther is a woman holding what looks like knitting neadles. Any Help?

But are both JESUS’ hands in Mary’s? Is He giving a blessing with one hand, for example? And is one of his sandals fallen off his foot?

Is the angel holding anything at all? Does the ‘woman with knitting needles’ have wings perchance (ie it could be another angel?)

It does really sound like an angel holding the spear and stick-on-a-sponge, but unless you can tell me what the other angel is doing/holding (if anything) then I can’t be certain.

Better still, take a picture so we can see it.

I don’t have my camra and I am in a shelter right now waiting on this hurricane to hit but Mary has both hands on Jesus and Jesus is kind of holding up her chin I’ll try to find a picture on the internet

ICONS

I do not know what icon painted with Our Lord as infant on right touching chin - some variant of Jakhromskaja and of Vladimirskaja. Also letters are most probable IC XC - which means in Greek and Slavonic Jesus Christ.

However, I think what you are describing as “knitting needle” (?спица) are really swords - should be seven in number aiming at heart of Mother of God. These are two kind icons: Prophesy of Simeon - Seven Swords three on right and four on left, and Semistrel’naja (Seven-arrow) in which there are three on each side and one from bottom. This icon is based on prophesy of St. Simeon the Prophet who told Mother of God her heart would be sworded.

Oh dear - should’ve guessed 😦 keep safe now!

Is it this one?

I’ve always heard it called the “sweet-kissing” icon, it looks like it is also known as “loving kindness”…

Here’s info on that icon…
