In latin iconography (namely, statues) one generally sees martyrs holding palm fronds. Is that also the case in icons?
I ask because I always hear that palms were the Roman symbol of victory. Now, while I believe that this is part of the reason, can’t the palm symbolism also be traced to the book of the Apocalypse, where the victos of the great tribulation all have palm fronds? While one might say that the imagery is taken from the Roman culture in which the Church was spreading, truth is the imagery is also that of the celebration of Suchot, where palm fronds are used as well.
