Catholic radio had a speaker talking about icons today, and how they are said to be “written” not painted. In researching icons, I noted two Russian Orthodox icons that are weeping what is termed “myrrh” in Hawaii. When our (Catholic) priest filled an alcove in the parish church with the relics of (Catholic) saints, a dark, sticky, resinous and slightly bitter substance resembling myrrh was oozing down one wall. Oddly, nobody made any mention of this and I presume they thought it was some kind of roof leak. I never saw this before and lived in this parish since this addition was put on. Is there any precedence in the ROC? I would also like to note that this priest was disciplined for sexual indiscretions with a mentally disabled person. Is the myrrh considered a good thing? Thanks for any information on icons in general and this myrrh in particular. Is there any process in the ROC for approving or authenticating this phenomena?
