If you don’t know the hymn, “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” you tube or google it.

Then fill in the blank with your own word(s) :

“I’d rather have Jesus than _______________.”

This was really hard for me and my husband! It made me wonder just how serious I am about my faith, and realize just how fixated on this world I am. 🙂

But I finally realized, “I’d rather have Jesus than a Chip and Joanna Gaines home makeover.”

(Although I’d really like a Chip and Joanna Gaines home makeover, too. See, it’s easy to repeat the words of the hymn, “I’d rather have Jesus than anything,” but it’s harder to really mean it with all my heart. Maybe I’ll get there someday.)

So I’m not allowed to say silver and gold even if it’s true?

Too external. Too distant. Too foreign. Too bible Christian-ish.

Jesus is not something or someone we “have” or “possess/”

As members, physical parts of His mystical Body, we are united with Him. We are called to be Christ for others.

We do not possess Him, we love Him. He desired to possess us, since He called us.

Which would you prefer?

Way to ruin the fun. It is a beautiful song. I especially like Alison Krauss’ version.

We do have Jesus. I have a husband and my husband has a wife. That doesn’t change the fact that we are united in Holy Matrimony.

Have you ever read the Song of Songs? “I am my beloved’s and my beloved is mine.”

There is nothing in this song that is contrary to the Catholic faith.
I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold;
I’d rather be His than have riches untold;
I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands;
I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand
Refrain:
Than to be the king of a vast domain
Or be held in sin’s dread sway;
I’d rather have Jesus than anything
This world affords today.
I’d rather have Jesus than men’s applause;
I’d rather be faithful to His dear cause;
I’d rather have Jesus than worldwide fame;
I’d rather be true to His holy name
He’s fairer than lilies of rarest bloom;
He’s sweeter than honey from out the comb;
He’s all that my hungering spirit needs;
I’d rather have Jesus and let Him lead

@babochka Thank you, I agree whole-heartedly. Do you want to post your link on our hymn sharing thread as well?

OP, I think your post is a great reminder.

I think I did post it early on. Or maybe I just posted the title of the song. I’m not sure now. 🙂

Haha, I’m not sure now, either, but I didn’t remember seeing it.

The word have also means:
.
experience; undergo.
“I went to a few parties and had a good time”
synonyms: experience, encounter, face, meet, find, run into, go through, undergo
“he had trouble finding the restaurant”
experience;
enjoy
“I had a good time”

We experience, encounter, meet Christ at the Eucharist.

Alison Krauss was one of my dad’s favorites. He loved bluegrass music.

It gets back to a question about the commandments

Jesus answered

People don’t realize it, but they get this order screwed up BIG TIME

I’m thinking that last 4 lines were not in the traditional version:

George Beverly Shea wrote the song and no one sings it the way he did!

Ho-oh but if I get the Soul Silver version I can get a level 75 Ho-oh real easily if I save the Master Ball. I don’t know if this works in the original.
