Mind is fundamental in dualism and the stuff we experience is content of our mind. Now consider a set of minds which each experience a specific internal and external reality. We share the same external reality therefore our content of mind, external reality, should be synchronized and be same all the time. This is impossible unless an agent, God for example, sustains our content of our mind accordingly. We however observe fantastic complexity in our body and the world around us. There was no need for that complexity if we are supposed to only experience the reality. Therefore idealism at the best is absurd.

Can you explain why idealism is absurd?

for a long time, I had some people calling me an idealist and that drove me crazy because I thought of idealism as being a kind of Pollyanna-ish fantasy that did not take reality into account.

However, they finally clarified that they meant a Platonic idealist, someone who believes in ideals to strive for. (Apparently this is no longer cool, unless being cool is itself a Platonic ideal?)

So there’s a difference. Seeker, which one are you talking about?

STT,
Could you please give us your definition of idealism?

The title of this thread caught me because I’m convinced that it is important to strive for our ideals and TRY to live up to them. In the political realm this idea is always pooh-poohed. ]

We must make sure we are talking about the exact same thing before we can begin to discuss it.

Thanks,
Reg.

EDIT:
STT,
I wrote the response below before seeing that you posted in the Philosophy Forum. Maybe philosophers understand the wording … but I’m no philosopher.

Some Logic for beginners wouldn’t be bad for you, STT.

I meant idealism.

There is an area in brain which we believe create sense of self. Why there should be an area in brain when sense of self is part of nature of mind in idealism?

The idealism is a system of thought which claims that mind is fundamental and what we experience by our mind is an idea.

It is alright I am not a philosopher either. There are tons of good philosopher around here. I think they would correct us if there is a problem with my definition.
