I am in the process of shifting from a pagan/heathen, very heavily involved relationship with a spirit entity (several actually) and am experiencing some Fear. I already have a bit of an anxiety issue where I have difficulty getting out of my home.
But in shifting from this previous relationship to one focused on Christ, I am experiencing Fear, which seems to not be right. I should be absent the fear, should I not? Christ and His angels are watching over me, then I should not have to sleep with tv on and a rosary wrapped on my wrist or a bible next to the bed for those sudden wakeful moments in the night, should I?
With these other spirits, there was no fear of every shadow. Shouldn’t the presence of God’s Holy Angels help alleviate that fear?
So, does anyone have any suggestions for things that might help deal with this? Specific prayers that work for you? Devotions?
I am making my first attempt to get to confession/mass this weekend. I do not yet see how that will help alleviate the fear I experience at home, especially given how difficult it is to connect with others and build any sense of community in the church, but I am trusting it will work eventually. I think maybe some prayers or systematic method might offer some sense of foundation and comfort as the practice builds. I may be way off base with that, but it makes sense to me. So, ideas anyone?

You should have a strong devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and should definitely read: The Devotion to the Sacred Heart, by Fr. John Croiset, S.J… The book is a classic and will be most helpful to you. God bless you.

Thanks, ready. Just downloaded to my Kindle and plan to start it now.
God bless you as well.

The fear comes from satan-on our side it’s basically a test. Satan doesn’t let go of us easily and an atmosphere of fear and oppression surrounded me when I was first approaching the faith.

And here is a prayer you can say in the meantime… Say this out loud in your house!

Prayer for Protection
Code:
I bring myself into the presence of Jesus Christ who is Lord, the victorious Jesus, the risen Jesus. I cover myself with the blood of Jesus Christ. I take up the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, the power of the name of Jesus, the power of His Cross and bind any disruptive powers, forces or spirits in the name of Jesus Christ. I claim the blood of Jesus Christ in the air, the ground, the water, the underground, the netherworld. In the name of Jesus Christ, I especially bind any agitation, controversy and disruptive occult power or hierarchy.
I take authority in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and bind away all evil spirits from my spirit, psyche, emotions, bodies and relationships. I bind away all evil spirits from the air, water, food, medicine, utilities, the buildings, machinery, the ground, the underground, the netherworld and I command all evil spirits to go directly to Jesus.
I take authority in the name of Jesus Christ and bind all occult spirits in this area and command you not to harm us. I pray against any evil sent our way and pray that evil return to its source.
I pray the protection of the blood of Jesus on us, our relatives and friends, on our homes, automobiles and our possessions.
Jesus, may your resurrection light fill us with your protecting love. Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ, crush the head of the serpent.
May St. Michael, St. Gabriel, St. Raphael and our guardian angels protect us from all evil spirits and intercede for our needs and abide with us.
In Jesus Christ’s name we pray.
In the name of Jesus Christ be blessed and anything that’s evil be cast out! + Amen.
Works for me! And here is a short prayer to God the Father. Say it at night and it gives such comfort!
Night Prayer to God the Father
Eternal Father,
I desire to rest in Thy Heart this night.
I make the intention of offering to Thee
every beat of my heart,
joining to them as many acts of love and desire.
I pray that even while I am asleep,
I will bring back to Thee souls that offend Thee.
I ask forgiveness for the whole world,
especially for those who know Thee and yet sin.
I offer to Thee my every breath and heartbeat
as a prayer of reparation.
Amen.

God bless you!

Satan doesn’t like to let any of his organization just walk away, it’s easy to get in and hard to get out. But it can be done, perseverance, continual prayer, fasting, alms giving and faith, these are the weapons proven to work. I suggest the rosary of course, the chaplet of divine mercy and talking to God all through the day, searching for His answers in the smallest of things and giving thanks for the beautiful creation he spread all around us.
May God’s peace be with you brother

@petra22 I particularly like the night prayer. As I was reading through it I was struck by the phrase “…I will bring back to Thee souls that offend Thee…” and it struck me as being a statement of someone who is ‘on the hunt’. Is this simply a recognition of a call to be a witness for God? It seems odd that it is preceded by the statement " while I yet sleep". How do we “bring back souls” to God while we “yet sleep”?
If my question seems rude. or odd, forgive me. I pay very particular close attention to what comes out of my mouth while praying. Years of dealing with this particular spirit entity I am attempting to get away from have taught me to choose my words carefully and so I simply wish to understand even the simplest prayer that I might pray. I think one could not be too careful in these matters.

@fhansen Does it come down to a test of which we will believe in more? Is it a situation where Satan will press harder so we feel the effects of his efforts more strongly and Jesus and his angels will quietly wait to see if we choose to turn to Christ? In such a way that we might not feel their presence as strongly?

Maybe that doesn’t make sense. I’m just trying to find a way to understand this so I can stay strong and get through this. Hopefully it is short-lived.

It will pass. God allows these things for His purposes, according to His wisdom, so remember that He’s still, always, in control. The experience-the knowledge-of evil is part of our education-of our ultimately learning to embrace the good all the more strongly.

Also, in building my ‘arsenal’ , if you will, I came across Cardinal Rafael Merry del Val’s Litany of Humility. Is anyone familiar with this and could speak to how effective it might be in helping heal some of the anxiety and fear I am experiencing?

One of my problems that defeated me in the past was a tendency to grow bored with the repetition of the prayers I had chosen. Admittedly, there were very few of them. I am thinking that by having a larger selection, I will help alleviate the tendency toward boredom and stay committed to my decision rather than giving up and walking away.

Is it helpful to have a larger selection and work toward faithfulness in this way? Y’know, alternate every few days and change things up periodically when weariness sets in?

my thanks to fhansen and to georget for the encouragement. Well, to everyone really. I am so much more hopeful going into this than the last time. Just understanding what is happening instead of relying on my emotional responses alone and in ignorance is a huge difference this go around. May God bless all of you.

Wonderful answers here.

I have always heard it said that Satan will leave you alone as long as you’re no threat to him. Therefore–congratulations! You’re a threat to him! 😉

One of the great saints (Teresa? Catherine of Sienna?) once railed at Jesus, “If this is the way you treat your friends, no wonder you have so few of them!” Again–congratulations! You’re dong something right! 😉

Very seriously, I really do mean congratulations on turning to God. I believe God and the angels do rejoice greatly over those turning back to God.

Please know that my prayers will be with you daily, and I hope you’ll pray in turn for a friend of mine (I’ll send her name in pm if it makes any difference) who is deeply involved in paganism, witchcraft, spells, believes she’s walking the astral plain helping lost souls, etc. I believe the prayers of those who have been there have their own unique power with God.

Hi,

Also try using Holy water and wearing a St. Benedict cross. Hang a crucifix in your home.
I believe in a short time you will feel better. Welcome home! We are praying for you.
May God bless you abundantly.

I will definitely pray for your friend! I have a list of friends I am praying fervently for. I would be honored to add your friend to that list.

I can get Holy Water at the church, right? Just take my container with me?

Pray the Hail Mary often! One Ave said in faith makes all of hell tremble according to St. Bernard. Oh, and have a Priest bless your house if you can; and if you don’t already, try praying some of the Divine Office! divinumofficium.com/cgi-bin/horas/officium.pl

God bless! will pray for you!

I’d suggest these 2 titles as being very comforting:

“The Friendship of Christ” by Robert Hugh Benson, and “Jesus as friend” by Salvatore Canals.

Also, the following 2 Bible verses have helped me get thru the rough and frightening times:

**"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
  • Jeremiah 29:11-13
"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
  • Romans 8:38-39**
God bless and keep you!

I take it to mean that I have offered him my heart beats and my every breath and the prayers that I have said for the day, those prayers will find success if I rest in His heart at night, even though I have no knowledge of it. He does.
And may God bless you with peace, faith, strength, hope and love!

Hi timetraveler,

You can get holy water from your church.

Sometimes when I am not feeling well, I will just pray short ejaculatory prayers. Those are prayers like, “Jesus, help me.” “Lord, have mercy.” Jesus, Mary, Joseph." “Guardian Angel, help me.” “Jesus, I Trust in You.”

I would say, do whatever you have to do right now, to feel better. If that means that you have to sleep with your rosary with you, to go ahead and do it. If you have to leave the TV on, to do it. If you have your Bible next to you, to keep it there. To me, there is nothing wrong with trying to comfort yourself.
