I think homemade Christmas gifts are a great idea! I’m trying to do that this year as well to save money. Although I’ve come to find that sometimes, buying the supplies costs just as much!

For the girls in my life, I’m trying to knit scarves. We live in a pretty cold area, so they are always useful. And my mom and I found some beautiful white yarn with flecks of silver in it. They look great (well, they would if I was any good at knitting!).

It’s easier when you know what people like. For my step-dad and some of his friends, we make homemade fire kits. I know that sounds confusing. But we make homemade fire starters. You get pinecones and put them in muffin tins. Then you pour wax in the tin and add a wick. It’s a homemade fire starter and they work really well. Then we’ll toss some of them in a basket with one of those boxes of the really long matches. It makes a really fun gift for them, since they all love sitting by the fire.

We also do alot of ready made mixes. Just get big mason jars and put mix in them. Like cookie mix or hot chocolate mix. You just add the dry ingredients and then the person adds the wet ingredients. We put fancy instructions on there and some pretty ribbon. It looks like you b ought it at a store, but it’s home made. And it’s a fun project!

Have fun!
I like the idea of cookie mix or hot chocolate mix–what a great idea!!! I love that idea…and I think I’m going to borrow it.🙂

Yes, I love the mix ideas too! Sounds like they’re really popular! How about all you “mix gifters” share your mix recipes with us? 🙂

Fitz,

It sounds like your family really has the right idea about Christmas. It must be wonderful!
This is a fun and inexpensive way to buy gifts.
Each person is given a $$ limit (no more than 10 to 15) and a list of dollar or .99 cent only stores to choose from.
The goal is to see who can buy gifts that fit the person.
My plan is to do this with my grown sons 😉
and to contribute the extra to charity.

The key is to make it fun…and funny!
I think I am going to make sure they produce receipts…no cheating allowed! lol

I have a friend who gives only 3 gifts per child…this is what our Savior got!
Sounds like a plan to me.

I’m knitting dishcloths for a lot of people. Here’s a site with a TON of free patterns:

Other people are getting cocoa mixes. For those people, I’m melting chocolate chips and dipping plastic spoons into it so that they can use those spoons to stir their cocoa and it gets melty and even more chocolatey. MmMMm! For select people in this group, they’ll also get a baggie of mini-marshmellows with a printed out tag reading: “You’ve been naughty/So here’s the scoop/You’re getting nothing/But SNOWMAN POOP!!” That will only be included for those I know can take a joke.

I will also do tins (which I got after Christmas on clearance last year) of candies. I have a 14 yr old brother-in-law who loves my buckeye candies.

Yet other people will get an acrylic snowman that I painted. I pick them up from Michael’s at a pretty good price. And they’re adorable!

Home made Christmas cards (with a twist)

Get your family to dress up as Characters from the Nativity and photgraph them in classic Nativity scenes. These Photos make brilliant Christmas cards, and is lots of fun for the whole family. just stick the photos on the front of some plain card. Easy thing is, once you have the photo, just make lots of copies and you can send them to all your family and friends! You can have lots of fun making the costumes out of stuff you’d find lying around the house.👍

You could have fun with this one!!! You could even get a public domain picture of the nativity, and Photoshop the heads of family members into the slots.

I volunteer for the camel!!!
