I am giving up chocolate this Lenten season, swearing, and praying the rosary daily. I think I might want to do something else instead of the swearing, as I don’t swear toooo much but I gave this up one year and I didn’t feel any change. I was thinking of either doing something nice for a stranger, co worker, – not a close friend or family member, once a day. OR give up getting mad/angry. advice??

I tend to think that swearing and getting angry without cause are things that Christians should give up in any event, not just for Lent. (Not saying I’m perfect in that regard either).
I’m thinking of giving up watching TV. Except that since I just sprained my ankle that might be really hard. Some people addicted to their smartphones are cutting down on checking them.
We are advised to give up something that interferes with our relationship with God. Praying the rosary daily is a great idea. Is there anything you do that isn’t necessary and eats into your prayer time?

You giving up praying the Rosary daily?

Not sure what i am going to do. Like to give up alcohol but not sure if i have the strength.

Would also like to do a few things for Lent.

No lol, sorry I meant I am going to pray the rosary daily for my Lenten practice, and give up chocolate and swearing. I just want to make it more meaningful somehow.

Well, giving up a sin is always a good thing to do.

What we “give up” for Lent is voluntary, but, what we give up is a good thing to count as penance.

Give up chocolate, but, do you replace it with other sweets? Try giving up all sweets. Maybe give up all drinks except black coffee and water. It should hurt a little, the good thing we give up.

A priest told me that he asked a little child what they were giving up for Lent?

The boy said going to mass!

That’s how I feel too. The thing isn’t, if I give up all sweets, I will start thinking anything that tastes sweet is a ‘sweet’ , like fruit, cereal, etc. I used to give up junk food a lot of years for lent, but I started thinking almost everything was junk food. So, I just want to be specific as possible lol. It’s hard because I don’t have anything I have to have or crave all the time. Chocolate was the only thing I could think , or also maybe TV would be tough. i am planning to give up chocolate, and swearing. And, every time I mess up with swearing I will say a prayer for the person I am swearing at or about, or if I am not swearing about a person then I will say an Our Father and Hail Mary. I wish I could do something more of a struggle, like give up hot water or something, but I also want to do something I know I will commit to and be able to do.

I like the idea of committing to doing something to bring you closer to God rather than only giving something up. I’m considering walking to the local parish for adoration every evening. I’d also like to do some sort of service, preferably something I can include my daughter in.
