Identifying as born-again when asked about religion

I don’t think that is true for all Protestants, just the Evangelicals who sum up their teaching with “getting saved”. Though they seem to be the majority of American Protestants.

Lutherans and Episcopalians believe they are “saved” when they are baptized, usually as small children/infants.
andrewstx,

Just a point of correction regarding the Anglican view of salvation, at least from my Anglo Catholic perspective (other Episcopalians may disagree.)

I would not say “I am saved,” as salvation is a life long journey and involves the Sacraments and the corporate life of the Church.

When our Rector was asked how to answer the question “Are you saved?” He said he would say, “We are part of the people God is saving.”

I think we don’t talk about being a “born again” Christian, because “born again” is a given. We are born again through Baptism, in which our sins are forgiven and we enter into Covenant with God.

It’s like the phrase “Bible believing Christian.” As a Christian, I believe in the teachings of the Bible. I feel no need to say, I am a “Bible believing Christian.” If I didn’t believe the Bible, I wouldn’t be a Christian–certainly not an orthodox Christian.

So, I have no need to identify myself as a “Bible-believing-born-again” Christian. That is rather redundant–at least for me.

Peace and blessings,
Anna
