Identifying churches in communion with Rome

We were on vacation in Greece. I know some Greek Orthodox c
Churches are in communion with Rome, but I was not sure how to tell. We therefore did not go to Mass there. For future reference, how does one know what church we could attend dto validly attend Mass?

Lucky you! I would* love* to visit Greece, but I probably will never have that opportunity,

The Greek Orthodox are not in communion with Rome. You can find a list of Eastern Catholic Churches and Oriental Catholic Churches here. We are the 22 self-governing (sui iuris) Catholic Churches in full communion with Rome. Together with the Latin Church we make up the 23 Catholic Churches. If you are interested in finding parishes in the ECC and OCC you can go to Find A Parish and look either by location or by Church.

The word “Catholic” is used by both the Church in communion with the Pope of Rome and also by some Orthodox Churches in their names so it would not necessarily be helpful to look for that word in the name of a parish.

As a Catholic you are free to go to Divine Liturgy (Mass) in an Orthodox Church and simply not receive Holy Eucharist.

Thanks! I will make a note of the websites. I hope to get back to Greece someday. Getting a bit long in the tooth though, so who knows??? I really loved it. We went with a tour group and it was really not that expensive. Save your change! We do that sometime to save up for vacations.
