Identifying your Root Sin

I have his book that contains this list. In it he has a questionnaire designed to help you find your root sin. Personally I didn’t find that section of the book as helpful as others, but some might.

I’d tend to agree, as sin boils down to the fundamental choice between choosing God’s will or your own (“I will not serve”). I don’t remember where I read it but the idea is that all sin is just a version of the Fall- man either doubts God’s goodness or disobeys Him directly.

With regard to pride it can be helpful to look at the opposite too I’ve found (it’s my root one) I figured it out even though it was tough cos I am shy so my pride was a lot more hidden than some of those in your list. Here’s something I’ll post which might help in looking at humility, just the same thing but a different take on things, cos pride can be a tricky one to find if it’s hides away a little. Or if you’ve worked on some of it and rooted out some of the more obvious bits. Hope they help…powerful stuff.

The Holy Spirit nudged a resentment into a rage? That is an odd way to put it.

Do you mean withdrew the strength to keep a lid on it? What was the lid doing? Was it a natural try at charity or a natural try at pretending more charity than you had?

(I would think that God willing, the deceased has moved on and is enjoying the Beatific Vision…and perhaps interceding for your freedom.)
I suspect that the Holy Spirit wanted not only to take the lid off, but then to shine a light on it, so that it was not hidden from me. While it was hidden, maybe it was a bit like a virus in my soul. Experiencing the rage helped me to think it through, be grateful to God and take it to him for help. I thought I had forgiven the person for the damage they caused in their weakness, but maybe I needed to forgive them for this specific thing.

All I know is that it was cleansing and there were subtle differences between this experience and other times I become angry. I can’t put my finger on it but think that God in his mercy was helping me. And I suspect that there may be more hidden dirty washing that needs laundering.

I heard, today, on EWTN radio, Father Ricardo,
He said - there’s an ACTUAL ORDER - of the seven deadly sins.
THIS surprised me.
From the greatest to the least - has anyone heard this ?
Well, he said - after PRIDE - comes ( not the fall lol )
Avarice -
He then said - that Jesus - most often - talked of THIS deadly sin -
more so than the others - and it made total sense to me.

There is always more laundry; I suspect we get only as much of what we ask for as we can bear. If you think about it, it was like that with our parents, too. They didn’t tell us everything about adulthood when we were too small to react to some of the truth with anything but terror and misunderstanding.

Thanks for posting this! I already have it saved 🙂

I’m shy too (almost deathly shy in “real life”) and I’ve come to notice some aspects of pride in my own actions, though at first it was sneaky and hidden away. I think that’s why self knowledge is so important. We have to first know what’s wrong in order to fix it.

@misstherese

Well said ,But how can we know our faults and shortcomings self knowledge,i noticed one thing, which is easier way to know it ,can you guess? with out reading the next sentence,obviously when other corrects us or point it it out to us,but alas our pride deems them as enemies or we get disturbed, our ego’s are hurt ,and we often justifies them ,we should try to consider them our benefactors the next time we come across such situations.second way is just ask Jesus to reveal our hidden faults and sins then the Holy Spirit will enlightens us .as king David prayed.

Do you know other ways of Self knowledge or what’s wrong? in order to fix it? what if they are hidden for years

Psalm 19:12-13 But who can detect their errors? Clear me from hidden faults.13 Keep back your servant also from the insolent;

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is devious above all else;it is perverse—who can understand it?

Those are great ways to help us understand our hidden faults. I would also add that simply reading is a good way. Reading the works of the saints and other spiritual books helps tremendously. Then bringing it back to yourself to reflect on how it relates to your own life.

@misstherese

Yes,that’s nice too ,never thought about the saints works and matching them with our lives good idea! we all need a detailed reflection at least few of them,often i tend to keep repeating my sins,a kind of,by heartened them,am not happy with my confessions ,i need to dig deeper,a lack of self knowledge is guess as you mentioned the importance of it.

Do you have sins against the 10 Commandments ? in very detail as you posted about pride,i have one or two but its very brief and am not satisfied with the very few available on the internet,not helpful at all. Thanks in advance.God Bless
