This morning I was praying outside an abortion clinic along with fellow parishioners and as we were ending the last Rosary, a man yelled that we were idol worshipers. This is the first time I’ve encountered this verbal attack. My son said ignore him and we did.

Can anyone cite anything from the Bible that would show that man is wrong?

Well, there were statues of cherubim on the Ark of the covenant. There was also the bronze snake. If those aren’t statues, I don’t know what is. I’m not very good at scripture, so you can point out some inaccuracies if you’d like.

Idolatry is the worship of the idol itself. Where you worshipping that rosary itself? Hopefully not!

A rosary is a tool that helps us focus on/keep track of the prayers we are sending up to heaven. This is not idolatry.

Remind the man of Ex. 20:12 ‘Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God gives you’. It is the same idea about Mary and the saints, we honor them not worship them.

Good grief! We’re praying at an abortion clinic! After praying the Rosary for over sixty years, I know what a rosary is!
Now, back to my original question. Can anyone cite anything from the Bible that would show that man is wrong?

I didn’t have a conversation with him so I don’t know to what he was referring.

seeing the Rosary the man knows you all are is Catholic, most Protestants wrongfully, claim Catholic are idol worshipers.your son gave the right advice.remember we are not fighting against, humans but the evils spirits.a spiritual warfare, devils where angry with you and other as you where praying the rosary

Ephesians 6:11-13 12 For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to withstand on that evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.

Revelation 12:14 But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle=(ST John) that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. 15 The serpent poured water=(Word of God, false doctrines as some protestants does ) like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with the flood. 16 But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth=(Catholic and all those who honor Her and respect Her) opened its mouth and swallowed the river which the dragon had poured from his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was angry with the woman(Mother Mary ), and went off to make war on the rest of her offspring= (Catholic and other who honor Mother Mary , on those who keep the commandments of God and bear testimony to Jesus. And he stood on the sand of the sea.

Usually, the passages cited from the Bible in defense of using sacred images are the ones where God is commanding Moses to create cherubim of gold to adorn the temple. However, we need to remember that the Bible doesn’t contain the whole teaching on this issue because we aren’t sola scriptura, unlike those Protestants who make the accusation “idol worshipper” to us.

A good discussion of the overall Church teaching, which includes the scripture and the pronouncement of the Council of Nicaea, is here:

Usually it’s not worth arguing with Protestants who’d hurl such an accusation at you in that context of being outside an abortion clinic. Their minds are closed and they just want to yell some angry thing. They are best ignored and prayed for.

I think you’re assuming a lot here. I don’t know if “most” protestants see Catholics as idol worshippeds- some do, but “most”? Don’t see it.

This was at an abortion clinic, so it might not have been a protestant at all. Could have been an anti-life activists who thinks anyone who is pro-life worships the fetus as an “idol”.

The guy could also have just been some atheist who wanted to say something nasty to a Catholic. Everybody knows Catholics have statues of Mary and saints, and it’s an easy target to make fun of them for it.

^ ^ This. It’s not even worth it to debate with someone if they can’t for a moment set aside their prejudices when they are both fighting for the same cause.

Unfortunately what you say is true especially in the philippines where people touch and sometimes rub their handkerchief around the hand of a saint or the statue of the black nazarene

No, these are the facts, not assuming things, that would absurd, nobody who see people praying the rosary would say such things except the protestants, they vehemently state we worship mother Mary and idols.i said most not all, your not aware of such things.

I only base things on my own personal experiences, and its been many a moon since a protestant called me an idol worshipper and I’m 61.

Maybe you’re hanging out with a tough audience, or I’m in a particularly civilized part of the globe.

Since he is making the accusation, it would be his responsibility to produce something from the Bible that supports it.

There is nothing in the Bible that would forbid the use of a Rosary for prayer. No one is worshipping the beads!

Most generally speaking, Protestants see Catholic as idol worshipers, sorry we don’t go by personal options or experiences we all have them, best kept that way.
I’m in a particularly civilized part of the globe.
doesn’t matter where you live, nor make you superior to others, does it ? we are speaking general terms ,majority.

Most generally speaking, Protestants see Catholic as idol worshipers,
Not the Protestants I know. In fact, a Pew opinion research poll finds that a solid majority of Protestants see Catholics as more alike than different from them.

Sure, there are a few people with ignorant opinions, and even a smaller number that actually vocalize those opinions.

But the vast majority of all people, Catholic, Protestant or other, go out of their way not to express opinions that will make them look stupid.

Your son is wise, and you were wise to follow his advice. This was not a “teaching moment”.

It is unfortunately not uncommon that some people feel entitled to make snide disparaging remarks about another person’s religion. You see it a lot on this very forum, from Catholics and non-Catholics alike. Or even between Catholics who disagree with each other.

Such comments are usually based on plain ignorance. The man you encountered is not interested in hearing your side of the story, so trying to educate him would be a complete waste of time. He already has his mind made up.

On the other hand, the reason the man made the comment has nothing to do with his religion. It has to do with ignorance and spitefulness. Do not fall into the same error as he did and let this make you think less of our Protestant brothers and sisters in Christ, by far most of whom are fine people who would never dream of doing such a thing, and be just as horrified at the incident as you were.

Some Protestants make nasty and ignorant comments about Catholics. Some Catholics make the same sort of comments about Protestants. It’s the same for all religions: every barrel has some bad apples in it. Don’t let that diminish your view of the good apples. Be kind and treat everyone with the kindness they deserve as children of God. And don’t let that diminish your love for this man, because, misguided as he is, he is just as much a child of God as you are, regardless of his beliefs or lack thereof.
