If a doctrine was false

Hypothetically if the church issued a doctrine that was sinful (please dont say this could never happen, I said hypothetically) would lay people sin by following said doctrine or would that sin be on the people who issued the doctrine?

No, we would not be held accountable. We are only accountable if we know it’s sinful (and if the Church taught it, we supposedly wouldn’t know).

It depends on if the person in question should know better. St. Thomas says the faith of the “simple” is not harmed when they follow the erroneous teaching of the “learned” in good faith as long as they intend to share the Church’s faith.

The simple have no faith implied in that of the learned, except in so far as the latter adhere to the Divine teaching. Hence the Apostle says (1 Corinthians 4:16): “Be ye followers of me, as I also am of Christ.” Hence it is not human knowledge, but the Divine truth that is the rule of faith: and if any of the learned stray from this rule, he does not harm the faith of the simple ones, who think that the learned believe aright; unless the simple hold obstinately to their individual errors, against the faith of the universal Church, which cannot err, since Our Lord said (Luke 22:32): “I have prayed for thee,” Peter, “that thy faith fail not.”

Could be both.
Those in leadership who espouse heresy, or schism, or whatever you would like to call it, lead others astray. That’s the sin of scandal.
And it is also a responsibility of the individual not to listen to whisperings, but adhere to the legitimate Magisterium of the Church.

If an actual dogma of the Magisterium were shown to be wrong, I’m not sure many would be judging the sinfulness, or lack thereof, based on Catholic standards. It would sort of depend on where one goes after learning that a major reason for being Catholic, the infallibility of the Magisterium, was provably false.

Very good point. If one is following his/her well informed conscience, which is formed on the teachings of the Church, then…one would likely be less culpable.

The person could just as likely share full culpability, however, if his/her conscience was screaming to them, “this is wrong”, and they failed to listen/investigate further.
