If a house/store has been blessed... can it still be haunted?

I help run an internet cafe. However, there are times when I have to work really late (and my customers are all quietly content with listening to their headphones thank goodness) and I hear strange creaking noises from upstairs like someone was walking.

My parents already told me had it already been blessed. However, even though my parents are good Catholics, they aren’t really huge fans of ghost stories and the supernatural so I don’t think it would be a good idea to talk to them about it. They may not take me seriously. 😦

Can a house still have a ghost even though it’s been blessed?

In my opinion, yes.

I had our house blessed when we first moved in. I also hosted a Majellan’s meeting where we had Mass in my home and on a second occasion, when we had our AP over for dinner, had the house blessed yet again.

I still had ‘something’ there. Some things take more than a blessing to remove.

Speak to your priest about it.

The creaking noises could also come from the movement of the house.

Okay, um… any idea how I can do that without my parents knowing? They really hate it when I do something that has to do with supernatural stuff. They say it’s a waste of time. 😦

Please explain. I’m open to scientific explanations as well. 🙂

As building materials settle, they become uneven in relation to their connections, which strains them and makes them creak. It’s not just old wooden houses, but all buildings. The more materials in use the weirder it cna sound, especially if there is room to echo. A crawlspace can echo badly. Air ducts echo. That can make it sound like footsteps.

Do these sounds occur in a pattern? I wanna make sure. I’d go upstairs and check if it ever happened again but… I’m not exactly courageous. :o

When the weather changes or central heating is on can cause wood to shrink and expand, That can make some weird noises.

My advise is to face your fears and go look next time and if nothings there then it might just be a drop in temprature.

Although I’m a firm believer in having a house or business blessed… sometimes, I think we’re too quick to jump to these conclusions.

Sometimes, buildings “settle” and you hear creaking noises. Our house is now 10 years old, and has developed a certain kind of creak in the upper hallway. Whenever I’m using the computer, I will hear it. It sounds like someone walking in the hall. It happens at all hours. Daylight and evening.

Our house has been blessed. So, I pay no attention to these sounds. Because our house has been “given back” to Jesus. Try putting your place of business under the Lordship of Jesus, with a simple prayer; For example, “I place this business under the Lordship of Jesus”… followed by an Our Father and a Hail Mary. Maybe sprinkle some Holy Water around. God bless.

Thank you and thank you all for explaining. As much a I’d like to have a ghost experience, right now I’m just not daring enough yet. I’ll keep your explanations in mind the next time it happens (now that I think about, this building is pretty old)

**Why would your parents even find out, or need to find out? Simply tell the priest that what you have to say to him is not to get back to your parents.

Why?

More than likely it’s the building materials settling at night. Wood (and pretty much everything else) expands in the heat, and contracts at night when things cool down. This causes a lot of creaking. I think you’re spooking yourself out by assuming it’s a ghost. If it does bother you, then just say a Hail Mary and then ignore it.

Be careful with that interest in ghosts you have. You can open yourself up to some real problems if you become overly curious about them, especially if you try to communicate with them.

IMO a house cannot be haunted at all. people may be possessed in exceedingly rare cases by demons (not ghosts) but not places.

It’s the house settling.

If ghosts were real, and they only appear visible at certain times…why would the laws of physics apply to them on some occasions ( making noise by walking), but on other occasions, they can contravene the laws of physics? ( while they are not visible)

If you lived in a cold climate ( like me) but today it’s stifling hot. 🙂

In the winter, you’ll sometimes hear loud snaps from the attic…it is simply the wooden trusses ( beams that hold the roof up) naturally reacting to a sudden drop in temperature.

If you didn’t know about this event…a person would think that there were ghosts making awful noises in the attic.

In my experience with deliverance ministry, people can experience levels of demonization that do not have to include a full-out possession. What can appear to be ghosts can be demonic activity.

Generally speaking though, there are natural explanations for things that go bump in the night. In this case, I don’t think the OP has demons. I hope he’ll keep it that way by not playing ghostbuster or trying to communicate with something like people do on ghost chasing shows.

Relax. As much as I wish I could bust demons the same way characters in an anime could, I’ve already read a book that tells me the dangers of spirit channeling and whatnot. The guy who wrote it was highly influenced by Fr. Gabriel Amorth (whom I’ve heard to be the leading authority on Exorcism). I know pretty huge deal about it. 😉

I watched one once on A&E…very weak premise…it was plain silly.
It may be silly, but it’s still dangerous. The worst thing about those shows is that viewers may get the idea that they can copy what the folks on the show do. I think Paranormal State is one of the worst with “dead time” which is essentially a seance.

Belief in ghosts is one of the reasons why I reject atheistic materialism.

**I reject atheistic materialism, too.

But I also reject ghosts, as they are commony believed.

I think it’s much more likely that your building is settling.**

I can appreciate people wanting to not delve into anything like a haunting or a possession.

I have had a terrible experience in my house that I bought, it was even a new house. Houses can be haunted and I know first hand. I will explain someday what happened. All I know is that when I had the house finaly blessed it was fine. I let someone live in it who was thinking of buying the place, while I was working in Washington DC. I came back to find the house empty and the door was left open. I talked to him to ask what the hell?? he told me that something desceneded upon him and held him and his wife to the bed with a deep laughter. It was a shadow type figure. He left that night to live with his inlaws till their rental became available .Many other things happened to him and his wife, which also happened to myself and friends that would stay over. Never had a friend stay over more than once or twice. Funny thing is my trying to sell the place I didn’t say anything about my “problems” Of course I should have, but that same thing happened to me before my conversion a year before. He took my Crusifix and threw it in a box like it was a piece of garbage. Of course being South West Missouri he was not Catholic though his wife was raised Catholic SHE should have known better to take a Crusifix off a wall and toss it in a box and leave it in the garage. So you may not beleive in a house possession I lived through one. got me to my conversion I tell ya!!! Now the house is fine people are comfortable there and feel a piece there. Scoob.
