I’m not endorsing any of these people claiming Francis is a false Pope, but will admit that one such article was one of two sources that brought this question up. The other was a Wikipedia description about Charlemagne.
As such, let’s use a hypothetical fictional character. Pope Clement XV sits on the Seat of St. Peter. The circumstances under which he was elected were sketchy, but kept out of the public.
During his initial years as ‘pope,’ he raises many beauti to full canonization, he oversees the opening of numerous causes, and declares a handful of martyrs.
A few years down the road, a contesting claim to the papacy comes up, and it is determined that poor old Clement is not the rightful pontiff. He steps down with little resistance.
By this point, many of the new saints have had parishes, buildings, and/or shrines dedicated to them. What happens to these “saints?” Do they have to go through the process again?
