If a ‘Bible Only’ Christian does not reply to a Catholic using the Bible to show Church teaching is very Biblical does the Catholic win the arguement? I have given my ‘Bible Only’ Baptist friend four very Biblical outlines defending Church teaching but he does not reply. I do reply to his Bible passages ment to show the Catholic Church is in error.

If I follow correctly from what established apologetic writers have said, your baptist friend has probably taken the responses you have submitted to his/her pastor for ‘clarification’ or refutation.
Strange. Such a practice is not biblical either. A Bible-only Christian should know that.

I am hoping, however, that your friend perhaps is seeing a glimmer of doubt staring at him/her from the pages of Sacred Scripture after seeing your replies.

***Hi, Gerard!

Part of the problem that some non-Catholic Christians have is that they do not accept the Church as Christian.

Another problem is that they seek to claim authenticity… this of course cannot be unless the Church is proven to be in error or, as some want to believe, missing–only to resurface in the fifteen hundreds…

If anything, every single opportunity that a non-Catholic (and even a Catholic) gives us to study the Holy Scriptures is a win-win situation: we learn or further familiarize ourselves with Scriptures and Holy Traditions and we can serve as a bridge to bring other Christians home to Christ!

God Bless!

Question “Angel” How would you being a Christian home to Christ when they are already IN CHRIST or as you put it home to Christ

Question “Angel” How would you being a Christian home to Christ when they are already IN CHRIST or as you put it home to Christ
***Hi, allischalmers!

…you got me… I’ve had so many engagements with Christians who invite me to “accept” Jesus as my Savior that I could not resist in wording my expression as such (bring to Christ those who are in Christ).

Since I am Catholic, from their perspective I am lacking true religion so they seek to bring me to Christ.

Yet, from my perspective they are lacking…

Just from your slogan (forever Baptist) I can surmise that we would almost invariably be at odds (this is based on past experience)… depending on your branch you will acclaim: sola scriptura, 66 Books in the Bible, invisible church (which was infiltrated by Catholics way back when) which only resurfaced in the fifteen hundreds, no Pope (“hierarchy”), no succession of the Apostles, only 2 or 3 sacraments, a variation on what constitutes the list of the Ten Commandments, always saved theory or not, some perplexing “salvation not by works” teachings, no hell, no confession, baptism only by submersion (hole/partial body…), baptism only at x age, hierarchy amongst God’s Triune Persons…

How can I bring you to Christ if you are already a Christian?

Jesus told Simon that he was kephas (a rock–I know, there are many interpretations but these are only conjured up to dismantle Christ’s own Word), and that on that rock He would build His Church and that not even the gates of hell, Hades, death, etc. could previal against it (St. Matthew 16:18). Since there’s only one Church that can verify a succession of the Apostles, I as a member of that Church can extend a welcome to all non-members.

I find the Gospel of St. John to be the most revealing and beautiful… not only does it proclaim Jesus as God (the Word was with God and the Word was God) but it establishes the Church as no other Gospel… and we know that the Church is the means by which we come to Christ… Jesus reveals that He and the Father are One and that together with the Paraclete they will abide in all of Jesus’ disciples… Wow… what great news! It was the Holy Spirit who revealed to the prophets of old the Word of God and the Holy Scriptures were collected in the various books of the Old Testament… some time after Jesus’ death, resurrection and ascension the Church, lead by the Holy Spirit, grew amongst both the Gentiles and the Jews… but during the very first years there were no new writings; the Apostles relied on Sacred Traditions as the main method of teaching and converting… eventually the Holy Spirit, as He had done in the past, inspired the New Testamente writings… it took the early Church nearly 300 years to come together and create the compilation of Books known as the Holy Bible, Bible, or Old and New Testaments. The belief (dogma) of sola Scriptura did not become a religious axiom until another 1200 or so years later; coincidentally, that was also the time when Protestants truncated the existing Bible and created “their” Bible–the number of books varied according to the leadership’s preference. Since these Protestants left the Church that also meant that they rejected all her teachings including the non-Biblical writings of the early Church (there are variations according to the branch of the schism).

Again, as a Catholic, with the fullness of the Church’s Sacred Teachings (Holy Scriptues and Sacred Traditions), I am obliged to welcome my non-Catholic brothers into the fullness of Christ…

I could go on… but this reply is getting way lengthy…

God Bless!

I will test this out this weekend. I have a welcome to the building party at my husband’s office. The people its in honor of are baptists. They make tracts and CD DVD and things to promote their ministry. They walked to each office and asked everyone in it if they were saved. I have a whole package of scriptures I am working on daily to be prepared for our meeting. I am going to start with the whole wine thing, then go to their origins, explain how they misread revelation to think we are the whore of you know what.
I dont want to do it, but I have to. Hopefully they will be very nice and listen.🙂 For me, its not about winning or loosing, its just about not letting them misrepresent us, and not misunderstanding scripture truths.🙂

Maybe he’s busy, or maybe he’s just tired of the discussion, or maybe he doesn’t know how to deal with your points.

None of these would mean he’s wrong and you’re right.

We’re not dealing with court findings here, we’re dealing with truth and authority, “failure to appear” doesn’t prove the fallacy of one’s argument anymore than posting to a forum and then blogging about your victory proves veracity.

Wonderful… I will be praying for your “success”. Perhaps one day soon you can obtain some CDs from www.biblechristiansociety.com to also give away. Many of them are on topics that a Baptist might find interesting:rolleyes: .

I have been giving away CDs (used to be audio cassettes) for years at different festivals. They are great conversation starters and great supplements to a tract or other handout.

Those that I can, I duplicate in big quantity for giveaway. PM if you are interested.

I had a very disenchanting debate with a Baptist once and it seems like it went the same way where they could really stand on some of the Scriptures but really lost that ferver on others.

***Hi, Hellisreal!

I’ll keep you in my prayers…

…know what’s the best about being an apologetic? …you always win!

I do not mean that you lord things over other people… I mean that even when others refuse to listen and re-examine their understanding of the Holy Scriptures you still come out ahead: studying the Holy Scriptures bring more understanding, more familiarity, new/old discoveries, deeper understanding of past revelations, a greater closeness to God as we open ourselves to the Holy Spirit’s guidance!:extrahappy:

Though Catholic from birth I did not begin to take Bible study seriously till a high school friend (self-professed atheist) tried to proseletyze me; after several exchanges he ended up borrowing a Bible from me (never got it back) and I began to study the Bible–I became aware that I knew as much as he about the Catholic Church and the Bible…:banghead:

…through the years I’ve discovered that when others ask for Biblical clarification or when they attack the Church my commitment deepens as I become more involved with the Bible and the Church: win-win!

God Bless!

Regrettably, we are not judges with sufficient jurisdiction to cover this case. Don’t claim victory, that belongs to God. You can remind your friend about your discussion though.

Hello Angel!🙂

You are so sweet!

I have not so exciting reports to come back with. The guests of the party did not show up. We went, and everyone left gifts and there was food, ect.

The guests of honor left a table of their tracts, and free take home CD and DVD stuff.

My child was dissapointed and left a hand made card for them.

My husband was not to happy I had a whole cardboard bankers box filled with my catholic stuff just in case. I had books, print offs, tracts I made- and rosaries with directions on how to use. I had my material in a separate carry bag.

Maybe it was for the best. I now have more time to view their stuff!!!😃

God willing, I can bear it.👍

Don’t mean to get this thread off-track…but that’s rude that the honorees did not even show up to their party!

Sorry…I digress…back to the thread! 👍

Hi GerardPaul,

I have had the exact same experience with a friend of mine who left the Catholic faith (not that she ever really knew it) to become Baptist. I have answered every one of her questions, but she has failed to answer many of mine. And on top of that, she uses the same old “arguments” over and over, totally ignoring my explanations/responses.

***Hi, Spirithound!

I think I understand Gerard Paul… several times I have been bombarded by Jehovah Witnesses and others (to the point that they, irately, have told me that I know nothing about God/Christ and when I am serious about learning to call/visit their temple/group) and, while they demand that I accept their views, they reject or dismiss everything I say (including Biblical text)… so when they are left speechless or do not continue the exchange I feel victorios… not so much as having defeated them but almost as when a boxer’s arm is raised though his head is still spinning not sure of what has just transpired… Did I win?:whacky:

God Bless!

***Hi, Hellisreal!

…I did not want to load you with anxiety… but it has been my experience that when non-Catholics say that they are open to Biblical exchange (or “non-denominational” discourse) they actually mean: “Let me tell you why the Catholic Church is the wrong place to be… and let me show you the true way to salvation…”

…they may also be waiting for the big guns (usually a senior member of the preselytizing group) to be available to met with you… either way you have bolstered your resolve and have made preparations for the battle; so nothing has been lost and much has been gained. 👍

God Bless!

i know how most of you feel

I went to a ‘Christian’ site.where some people kept saying that the Catholic Chruch is coruppted and Satanic…and I tried to quote verses from the Bible to support catholism…esp the teaching that we need to live out our faith so that we can go to heaven

but they either ignore some verses or come up with their own interpretation of certian verses and said what I quote from is a Catholic Bible…but when I compare the Protestant and Catholic Bible, whatever is in it is the same and they mean the same thing…why are they so ignorant

Love,

Thalia

Maybe not so much ignorant as too trusting of their pastor or whoever leads them. Or, constant indoctrination over time, leading them to be blind to what is right in front of them. Its sad, that good trusting people get exploited this way because they really want to believe their pastor is knowledgable and led “by the spirit” and would not steer them wrong.
Its not the people that are ignorant so much as its a spiritual crime on the part of the so called “theologian” pastors that SHOULD know what the scriptures say- but tell another story…

***Hi, Thalia!

…part of the problem is misinformation (just check the pilgrims’ original intent–freedom of religion–yet, almost as soon as their luggage was unpacked, they began their anti-Catholic campaigns), another part is the Church’s history (way back when bishops had armies, the clergy got married and own property and kept personal wealth, and as the authority of the Papacy was usurped left and right–both from within and outside the Church-- there was political (power) involvement as the Church was used as a tool of social control and to gain status (authenticity of title, blood, office…), and one other part of it is due to the denominational need to pronounce itself the true authority of Christendom: slay the Church and you become the church!

God Bless!
