After hanging out on a few “Christian” internet forums I have arrived at the conclusion that few people are interested in an actual discussion. Most people come to the other forums I have visited with their presuppositions neatly packed into a 30-round clip with one chambered, ready for target practice.

The interesting thing here is that anyone can come and is allowed to share their views essentially unmolested. If you are Catholic on other forums I’ve experienced you get deleted, drop-kicked, derided and excoriated merely for expressing the Catholic point of view.

They generally don’t seem to be interested in a genuine exchange of ideas about real life and the history of Christian thought. As the saying goes, if all you have is a hammer you tend to see every problem as a nail. Most of these other forums seem to have armies of hammer-wielding posters that enjoy squashing Catholics. As a convert from that world to Catholicism I understand the drill- but it ain’t pretty.

This is the only forum I’ve been on so far where people from other religions are generally allowed to express their points of view without catching a presupposition in the back and shown the door(at least with nowhere near the frequency that outside posters get hit elsewhere).

Some people on every internet forum (including this one) tend to go “ad hominem” a little too often and that is annoying. But this forum is the only one I’ve been on that makes an honest effort to accommodate other people’s views when they conflict with those of Catholicism.

I agree, and I probably know what protestant forums your thinking of.

From what I can tell, many of those protestants were raised with the mindset that Catholics are stupid and Catholic teachings are so heretical the Bible refutes them on every page. They are never trained to actually think about the doctrines, only ridicule them. Further, many of them love to cut and paste lists of supposedly anti Catholic teachings, as far as they are concerned its not about the accuracy of those teachings its about the appearance of evil in those teachings…as long as it SOUNDS bad its worth posting (the facts are a distant second). Whats worse is when a Catholic comes in who makes some good points the protestants panic and start tossing out all sorts of trash (eg its not uncommon to see a conversation totally unrelated to Mary suddenly turn into a trash and bash Mary thread).

Do you ever wonder why Jesus allows these to continue to trash his mother?

I think from the beginning, God has given us free will. You either use it in according to His Will or yours. This free will hasn’t been taken away from us.

I belong to some pagan forums that are really about discussion more than bashing. Unless people show up with an axe to grind, questions are pretty much answered with the assumption that what is being sought is information and/or debate, not an opportunity to maim.

just a reminder that not all religious forums are Christian, hateful, and intolerant.

they tell a lot of the same stories as you about their experiences at other religious forums, and are always happy to “come home”.
