After hanging out on a few “Christian” internet forums I have arrived at the conclusion that few people are interested in an actual discussion. Most people come to the other forums I have visited with their presuppositions neatly packed into a 30-round clip with one chambered, ready for target practice.
The interesting thing here is that anyone can come and is allowed to share their views essentially unmolested. If you are Catholic on other forums I’ve experienced you get deleted, drop-kicked, derided and excoriated merely for expressing the Catholic point of view.
They generally don’t seem to be interested in a genuine exchange of ideas about real life and the history of Christian thought. As the saying goes, if all you have is a hammer you tend to see every problem as a nail. Most of these other forums seem to have armies of hammer-wielding posters that enjoy squashing Catholics. As a convert from that world to Catholicism I understand the drill- but it ain’t pretty.
This is the only forum I’ve been on so far where people from other religions are generally allowed to express their points of view without catching a presupposition in the back and shown the door(at least with nowhere near the frequency that outside posters get hit elsewhere).
Some people on every internet forum (including this one) tend to go “ad hominem” a little too often and that is annoying. But this forum is the only one I’ve been on that makes an honest effort to accommodate other people’s views when they conflict with those of Catholicism.
