If gays can marry -then shouldn't prostitution be legal?

Keeping prostitution illegal is an infringement on ones “individual freedoms”. If we are truly secular, and laws are based solely on “rights”, then there should only be laws regarding the use of safe-sex practices in regards to legalized prostitution, right…?

Is this what we can expect in the name of progress?
 
It’s scary to think about but who knows what will happen in the next 50 years. As for me and my family, we will follow the lord.
 
Better for it to be legal, in a controlled environment, in the open - with the appropriate checks of the wellbeing of the women than for it to be ran underground, controlled by pimps and difficult to monitor.

The Women’s Institute in the UK are campaigning for it to become legal. It’s never, ever, going to go away. Besides, in a controlled environment, these women will be easier to reach, and punters are far more likely to go to a brothel then pick someone off the street who could be more in need of help than money.

Also, regarding the topic of the thread - sorry to tell you this, but there are a lot of these posts on CAF which seem to be titled “if gays can marry then [insert catastrophe] will happen to!” It’s worth mentioning here that the same was said about inter-racial marriage and the ending of slavery.

Correction: Prostitution is currently legal in Ontario, but is currently being appealed by the feds.

Prostitution itself has never been illegal in Canada. However, many of the activities associated with prostitution are (such as operating a common bawdy house, public communication for the purpose of prostitution, and procuring).

IMHO, the safety of sex workers is paramount, otherwise we end up with people like Robert Pickton. Are sex workers suddenly unworthy of basic human rights because what they do is considered “improper”? Maybe if we legalized prostitution and housed and taxed sex workers (like any other business) people would start seeing them as something more than disposable. It’s not a perfect solution, but it’s a start.

Do you think legalizing prostitution would make illegal prostitution (streetwalkers, call girls) go away?

While I agree with your reasoning, at the same time I appreciate the moral argument against the legalization of prostitution (and drugs, for that matter), as well as gay marriage. To those whose faith equates these behaviors as sinful, pure and simple, it is almost impossible to support them. It would be caving in to what some believe is an amoral, godless culture, sinking to the lowest common denominator. From a social perspective, I believe the argument has somewhat less validity since prostitution has been around in many cultures for eons without disastrous results, so why not at least regulate and safeguard it. Of course, Republicans are, as always, opposed to any and all regulations. Let the free market place decide!

I was under the impression that Aquinas, without in any way questioning the mortal sinfulness of fornication, etc., had already advocated the legal toleration of prostitution in the 13th c. on the grounds that such legislation was beyond the purpose of the state, and, in fact, that legislation against prostitution and other forms of fornication might actually be counter to the good of the state. He even argues that the income that women make in this fashion should be protected by the state.

It should be legal, IMO. The short logic of it (credit: George Carlin) is why is it illegal to sell something when it’s perfectly legal to give it away?

Most of the contingent problems that prostitutes face (where it’s currently illegal) can be properly mitigated if prostitution were, first, made legal, and second, treated like any other business, with operating licenses, and mandated working conditions, and so forth.

Did anyone read that article? Did anyone see that the former prostitute said that legalizing prostitution would not help women be safer but would perpetuate the problems?

Don’t you think a prostitute’s insight on this is worth more than yours, while you sit comfortably at your computer and pretend you’re some wise socio-economic sage?

This is the danger presented by those who call themselves Progressives. However, it is clear that expanding sexual pleasure “rights” is more important than expanding the knowledge of the dignity of the human person. Self-control appears to be ignored as if we have no control over own bodies.

Of course. But it’s called the oldest profession for a reason. It’s always going to be there, so why not care for the welfare of these women instead of “I don’t want it in my neighbourhood” retoric, while everyone knows the prostitutes are getting their money from somewhere? It’s the terrible truth of the matter.
 
Then let’s put all police officers out of a job since robbery, extortion, murder, etc, have always been around. So let’s save a few dollars and give those trained police professionals other jobs.
