A friend of mine excused his poor behavior by saying since he believes in God that means God backs him and since God backs him, he can do anything he wants to without fear of reprisal.

Is this true?

I personally don’t believe it is, but I would appreciate your thoughts on it.

I believe in Arnold Schwarzenegger, therefore Arnie will protect me when I go into a bar full of bikers and start insulting them. 🙂

This sounds like a variation of OSAS. I had a Presbyterian minister tell me once to not worry about all of the sinful things that I was engaging in (and even denied the sinfulness of certain actions such a pre-maritial sex and divorce and remarriage for non-valid reasons… 😦 ) because since I believed in God and that Jesus was sent to save the world, I would still go to heaven. He wasn’t completely reckless, though, because he did tell me that because of that belief in God and Jesus’s resurection, I should act in ways that were pleasing to God, but not to the point that I would be condemned to hell if I didn’t act properly.

Not until I converted, though, was I able to start on the path of not willfully sinning all of the time. I guess I had hell scared out of me (that’s a joke… 😃 👍 ).

God Bless!

Sounds like the “God/The Devil Made Me Do It” verdict. Not cool… not cool… :nope:

What’s so bad about taking responsibily for your actions?

Once saved, always saved devolved to its logical conclusion.Or perhaps that quote of M.Luther advising one to SIN BOLDLY.The Devil believes in God too…

Satan believes in God. Is everything that he does backed by God?

no it is not
Satan believes in God, he knows that God exists. Just believing in God is not enough, obeying is essential. If you love Me, keep My commandments, the Lord says.

You really need to find some faithful Catholic friends!

There is a warlord in Africa who uses the same argument. He and his army of enslaved child soldiers will rape, massacre, butcher, kidnap, torture, and forcibly mutilate the populations, all the while kidnaping and forcibly recruiting more children, many as young as three, to do unspeakable deeds.

All in the name of God.

He has said his goal is to build a new goverment based on the ten commandments. He claims to recieve his instructions from angels. He tells the children God will strike them down if they try to escape. And he points to passages in the Bible; the destruction of Soddom and Gommarah, the Great Flood, and other great disasters invoked by God, as justification for his actions.

Never assume God is on your side, strive to be on the side of God.

**No. **

**The Jews believed in God - therefore they were very severely punished for their sins, & the Babylonians had God’s backing against them. Their guilt was far greater, bececause they alone were God’s People - so their guil****t was enormous; they could & should have known better. **

Where more light is given, the punishment for sinning against it is greater. Hell is going to be far hotter for Catholics than for unevangelised unbelievers. Those who attend only to their privileges, & never to the duty that privilege imposes, are heading for big trouble. 😦

Newman makes the point in a sermon of 1847:

21 Not everyone who says to Me, “Lord, Lord,” shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
22 Many will say to Me in that day, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?”
23 And then I will declare to them, “Depart from Me, you evildoers I never Knew you.”
Ask your friend if he ever prays the Our Father or in his case the Lord’s Prayer-we affirm and entreat that “Thy will be done”.His will cannot be evil.I’m affraid that your friend will be backed right into hell.If he prays the Our Father he is betraying the prayer and condemning himself, just as those who refuse to forgive are preventing their own forgiveness by their words.
