If God both created the Universe and cares about humans, why did he make it so large?

Yes Ronnie, I am no longer a heliocentrist. Now before you fall around laughing again let me tell you why I, a very sane man with a brother who is a professor of Quantum mathematics, has come around to this way of thinking. Usually when I admit to my new position I am attacked. Why, I often asked myself, do fellow Catholics not take the time to see if there is any logic to this odd-man-out belief system and give it some Catholic consideration.
No cassini, I will not laugh at you, I think you are very wrong, but you are respectful and appear to be an intelligent person, hence I’m amazed you do believe in this. I’ve read only a little about the “Galileo affair” and I don’t recall a pope making an infallible definition of Catholic doctrine, though I could be wrong. I’m sure some of the local bishops made declarations of heliocentrism being contrary to scripture but I don’t believe a pope waded in with a infallible papal declaration of Church dogma. Anyway, while I feel you are wrong, I often say the “young earthers” who believe in God and believe in all the New Testament, and also believe in a 6000 year old earth are Less wrong that the atheists who don’t believe in God or the New Testament but do believe in a 13.8 billion year old universe and all that comes with that history.
 
You “were once a heliocentrist”? Do you mean to say you no longer are a heliocentrist? That the earth does NOT revolve around the sun? What about the Apollo space flights and Shuttle missions? All those photos taken from space. Wouldn’t they have shown this little sun revolving around the earth? At a certain point you have to accept SOME discoveries of human observation and experiment and reasoning, that whole world discovered by modern man and scientists and even NASA can’t be some conspiracy of the devil and atheist scientists.
The math works for both systems. It cannot be proven either way. The only way to know is look from outside this frame of reference.

What is left is a worldview decision.

Catholic have the advantage of Revelation to guide us.
 
If God did indeed create the universe (which I firmly do believe) then it is not to big or to small, seems that it would be its size because it is the prefect size to operate correctly in his perfect plan. 👍 blue

I’ve read their books and I can tell you that both men are geocentrists and believe in the 13.7 billion year old universe of the Standard Big Bang model, I don’t understand how folks can appeal the the scientific “authority” of guys like that when they want to make a point, yet dismiss them when their other positions of “scientific authority” are inconvenient. It’s kind of the same with cassini’s postion on the bishops during the Galileo affair, he’s bothered by the idea that they and the Church could be accused of teaching incorrectly on that subject, that they should be infalliable, yet he doesn’t have a problem saying that Pope Benedict is now teaching incorrectly. It’s not consistant, is he saying that the local bishops in 16th century Italy were infalliable but the current ***POPE ***isn’t?

Whoa - anthropic coincidence ultimately point to our existence. It is a progressive argument with each step requiring more fine tuning.

Paul Davies answers the multi-verse by stating (paraphrasing) that we then must allow for fake universes. I would add - universes with a God.

I just said the you had been discussing the “Privileged Planet” talking points about what a special ***Planet ***we have here in earth, yet you name dropped two physicists who have written about the “Anthropic Coincidences” necessary for the fine tuning of our Universe. The whole thing is based on the Standard Big Bang model, the chain of events necessary during the formation of the elements from hydrogen on to carbon and right on up to the heavier elements. For instance, how the “triple-alpha process” is very fine tuned for the formation of carbon in the center of these stars that had burst in supernovas billions of years ago. If you DON’T believe in a 13.7 billion year old universe, a Big Bang, and a solar system with an Earth that revolves around the Sun, then you can’t believe in any of Barr’s and Davies’ Anthropic Coincidences, which are based on that Standard Big Bang model of the evolution of our universe.

Not so fast. Anthropic coincidences support Creation as well. You brought up PP. I simply made the point there are 500 or so needed for simple life and not just on earth as well as the odds against…

The initial rate of expansion also would have had to be chosen very precisely for the rate of expansion still to be so close to the critical rate needed to avoid recollapse. This means that the initial state of the Universe must have been very carefully chosen indeed if the hot big bang model was correct right back to the beginning of time. It would be very difficult to explain why the Universe should have begun in just this way, except as the act of a God who intended to create beings like us (1988, pp. 126-127)

Let me try. On post #17 of this thread, buffalo wrote in response to a request to provide supporting evidence for a claim that only this planet can support life: “There is somewhere around 500 anthropic conditions necessary for a planet to support simple life.”. In other words, this was a clearly and unambiguously a response *specifically *about ‘Privileged Planet’ arguments. When challenged on this, buffalo wrote in post #21: “Stephen Barr good enough? Or how bout Paul Davies? Hawking, too”. In other words, buffalo is claiming, quite incorrectly, that respectable physicists support the Privileged Planet argument. This is to conflate, either through ignorance or design, the cosmological anthropic argument with the Privileged Planet argument. They are not at all the same thing.

The fact is that respectable physicists such as Davies, Barr and Hawking do not accept or promote the Privileged Planet argument and buffalo’s attempted use of them to support that dubious idea misrepresents them.

Then buffalo attempted to cover up his tracks by pretending he was talking about the cosmological anthropic principle all along.

I think that’s a fair summary of what went down.

Ronnie bonigli, I’ve read that literature as well, and I have no quarrel with the anthropic principle. What I have a quarrel with is the argument that out of 30\22 stars – that’s three hundred billion galaxies with a hundred billion starts apiece – our sun is the only star with a planet graced with the appropriate conditions to evolve life. That is a groundless and practically incoherent contention.

Sorry to answer your rebuttal Buffalo, but ronnie asks a very important question here that could be directed to me.

Ronnie, you admit only having read up on the Galileo case briefly from one of the versions offered to Catholics and others for 150 years. When I compared the child abuse scandal by homosexual priests who were allowed into the Church as priests en masse after Vatican II to the Galileo case I did so to show that churchmen of the Catholic Church are not above a little cover up work like any secular politicians.

Now if you want to get past their Galileo cover up first read up on the Council of Trent and then the infallible magisterium as defined by Vatican I.

The Roman pontiffs, too, as the circumstances of the time or the state of affairs suggested, sometimes by summoning ecumenical councils or consulting the opinion of the churches scattered throughout the world, sometimes by special synods, sometimes by taking advantage of other useful means afforded by divine providence, defined as doctrines to be held those things which, by God’s help, they knew to be in keeping with sacred scripture and the apostolic traditions.

The Authority of the Anti-Copernican Inquisition
In 1542, in the wake of the Protestant Reformation, Pope Paul III set up various congregations to assist the Pope in his task of safeguarding the Apostolic faith held ‘in agreement with Sacred Scripture and apostolic tradition.’ One of the most important of these was the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Inquisition, otherwise known as the Congregation of the Holy Office. The function of this body was specifically to combat heresy at the highest level. Then, in 1588, Pope Sixtus V (1585-90) gave this congregation even more explicit powers in the Bull Immensa Dei (God Who cannot be Encompassed). In this directive he made the reigning pope, whoever he may be, Prefect of the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Inquisition. This gave the Catholic world to understand that decisions assigned to its judgment, before publication, would invariably be examined and ratified by the Pope himself as supreme judge of the Holy See, and would go forward clothed with such papal authority.

This is the body that defined and declared belief in a fixed sun formal heresy. Here is how the greatest theologian the Church had at the time, Catrdinal Bellarmine, told Galileo of the decree:

and the Lord Cardinal, who was still in the room, the said Commissary did enjoin upon the said Galileo, there present, and did order him** in the name of his Holiness the Pope**, and the names of all the Cardinals of the Congregation of the Holy Office, to relinquish altogether the opinion in question, namely that the sun is the centre of the universe and immovable and that the earth moves; nor henceforth to hold, teach, or defend in any way, either orally or in writing.

Now that definition comes under the protection of the ordinary magisterium, never wrong as God promised.

But then came the so-called proofs, the ones you all insist on, and Rome fell hook line and sinker for them. Faith in the Church’s decisions went out the window faced with scientific ‘falsification’. Supernatural definitions cannot be proven wrong so infallibility is safe in that sphere, but here, oh my God, how do we save the Church’s infallibility in this case.

Today, after enormous scholarship and research by the likes of Maurice Finocchiaro in his book Retrying Galileo, the history of the U-turn is available for all to read. But I warn you, when it came to rejecting the Church’s original definition, the infallible one, any juvinlie secular court would have thrown out the Copernican case in ten minutes. Throughout however - thanks be to God - He wouldn’t allow the Copernicans to use the official organs of the Church to worm their way out of it. For an official U-turn, an official abrogation of the decree would have been necessary. The reason for the U-turn would have been necessary for the flock. In fact all the Copernicans did was remove the ban from the Index and hide the 1616 decree under a carpet in Rome somewhere. So, the Church’s infallibility was saved by this, not by the unofficial denials of infallibility that HAD TO BE SAID in the shame of that U-turn.

Then in 1905, Einstein reminded all that man cannot determine a H or a G universe. In other words the Church of 1616 was never shown to be wrong - infallible or not, it didn’t matter now. In 1905 then churchmen could have vindicated their predecessors of 1616 and 1633. But to do that would have exposed the Copernican heretics of post 1741 in the Church. So they left the 1616/1633 Church out to hang rather that ‘bring the Church into disrepute’ - as a poster said - by reasserting the unfalsified decree of 1616.

In other words, the heresy of Copernicanism is a more comfortable situation for Catholics today that to reclaim the truth base on faith in the Church’s definition of 1616 and 1633. Yes, their faith is now firmly with science rather than the infallibility of the Church.

Finally Ronnie, I can separate the official teaching of popes with the rhetoric of the Copernican popes. If the Copernican popes use their official perogative I fully accept their teaching.

Hugh is a creationist, with a creationist agenda, like the IDists and the YECers and what he has here is 59 pages of worthless junk. Basically, what he has done is to list every parameter that he can think of for the cosmological, astronomical, physical and biological conditions on earth. Then he claims that each one has to fall in a narrow band for intelligent life to be possible and he assigns a probability to each one. He then multiplies the probabilities together to get some ludicrously low probability for the emergence of intelligent life.

It’s complete and utter garbage for the following reasons. He doesn’t begin to justify why any one of his hundreds of parameters need to be tuned for life, and in fact few of them are. And of course he doesn’t justify the probability that any one parameter falls within whatever bounds he has arbitrarily chosen. He ignores the problem that we cannot assign a probability to a factor, unless we know over what range and with what statistics the factor can vary, and he utterly ignores the fact that many of his factors are not randomly chosen in the universe but are contingent on other more fundamental factors (in fact nearly all of them are) so that he is double, triple and quadruple counting. He ignores the fact that it is meaningless to talk about the probability of the emergence of a deterministic contingent factor, and he commits the cardinal statistical sin of multiplying the probabilities of dependent variables to get an overall probability.

Let’s take his first three factors in the list, just for example:

It’s pure nonsense.

Hang on a minute - we live in an unexceptional Pop I spiral galaxy of which there are hundreds of millions if not billions in the observable universe. It’s breathtakingly silly. Yes, but this is just like throwing mud at a wall in the hope that some of it sticks. If Ross was serious about this, he would have had a specific reference from each of his claims to one or more of those papers; when consulting those papers we should then be able to see why that particular factor is tightly constrained for the emergence of advanced life, just what the limits of the constraint are and his rationale for assigning a probability for the factor to fall within the limits. We would also be able to see why that factor carries an independent probability and is not contingent on prior factors that have already been factored in. As it is, the pages of “references” are as much junk as the rest of the paper (I’m not saying that the papers he references are junk but that the way he uses them are junk).

By the way, it seems to me that his modus operandi is to consider any variation from the actual conditions and history of the earth, however small, as being a barrier to advanced life. That is at best questionable and is yet another reason to reject his nonsense out of hand.
