If god can turn bread and wine into His body and blood, then why is it so impossible to believe that He could also use a 14 year old boy to bring forth ancient scripture and be a prophet of His church? This is NOT a question about doctrine. I would just be interested in knowing who thinks that God can do whatever He wants, no matter how little we may understand it at the time.

I completely agree with you. Why couldn’t He? I must ask you the same question then…Why couldn’t God protect His Church throughout the centuries? Why can’t He protect the Church from error?

So yes, I agree that He can do anything that He wishes:)

God can do anything He wants but only within His Nature. He can’t sin, lie, contradict Himself, etc.

I don’t think God does turn the bread and wine into His Body and Blood.

Sure he could have used a 14 yr old; He used an 8 yr old (Jeremiah I believe was 8 when God called him.). My problem with J. Smith that too much of what is taught by him is in contradiction to the OT and NT.

I suppose it’s not a question of could He, but rather one of would He.

Christians disbelieve the claims of Joseph Smith because they directly contradict the revelations we already have in the Bible. Even his account of seeing the Father and Jesus together, telling him to start a new Church is incorrect because we already know that no one can see the Father and live.

Additionally, the Church Fathers have long dealt with heresies similar to what is taught in Mormonism. In reality Mormonism is a collage of ancient heresies dressed differently.

God Can protect His church from error! I wanted to see if anyone here agreed that it was possible for God to do whatever He wanted! I seems that many seem to feel that God only does what ~they~ want Him to do and they put Him in such a little box that it does not leave much room for him to work in;)

Fabius - please re-read my question. It was NOT a question about Joseph Smith or the LDS Church and their beliefs, but rather a question about the ability of God to do whatever He wants even if it seems strange to us or others at the time. I am perfectly aware of what most non LDS people think about the LDS church:o

I was just elaborating :-P.

Anyway, yes, it’s perfectly possible. I mean, he used a 14-year-old kid, David, to kill Goliath, did he not?

No problem, Annie! My answer was, “Yes He could, but why would He?”

😃
You know, I don’t even pretend to know why God does what He does except for the reason that He doe what is best for us!
Annie
Live long and prosper my fellow trekker:) Oh my - a similarity between a catholic and a mormon??😃

Annie

God cannot do that which is inconsistent with his nature.

The age of the boy is not the conundrum. To say that God secreted ancient scripture so that its truth could only be known after 200 generations have passed since Christ without its salvific message to be found by a 14 year old boy is.

Yes He could but He would not make 1 and 1 equal to 3 to confuse both you and me!😛

Have God ever used pagans, basing from the bible, to deliver His messages? If they were then the mission of the Church to evangelize the world is not necessary.

There were probably a lot of pagan scribes or prophets, I imagine, who believed they were used by God but none of their works were ever considered “inspired” by the first Catholic Christians and so none were included in the final compilation of the Bible. The reason we have so many non-Christian religions, no?

I guess God’s intention is NOT to have diversity of faith for all people but to ultimately for all people to become and unite as Christians- one baptism, one Faith, one Lord Jesus Christ.

The message to evangelize the world was already told by none other than Jesus some 2000 years ago. I guess your 14 year old boy came too late.🤷

Peace but Truth is more important.🙂

Annie,

Nothing is impossible for God. For a Catholic however, there is no need to restore a church that never went into apostasy.

Let me put it this way. How would you react to a person that came along, called himself a prophet, had new scriptures, strange new beliefs and practices and claimed that the LDS Church was in a state of apostasy? Would you start reading his new book, attending his meetings, listening to his missionaries and pray to God to give you a testimony of these things? Wouldn’t your first reaction be one of surprise, doubt and suspicion? Wouldn’t you first insist they prove to you the apostasy claim? Of course you would.

That’s how we as Catholics view Mormonism.

God decided to turn a simple 14 year old woman into the mother of our savior. That beats all the other things that a 14 yo could be asked to do by God. 🙂

If God can protect His Church from error, why is it Mormons place God in a little box of not being able to protect His Church from an ‘apostasy’? Why is it Mormons place God in a little box of not being able to tell us all He wanted us to know in one set of scriptures? Why is it Mormons place God in a little box that He couldn’t keep His priesthood valid since starting His priesthood on earth? Why is it Mormons place God in such a little box that He could not be the fulfillment of all things so as to need more fulfillment through a 14 year old boy?

Was Joseph Smith 14 years old when he… found something something? I am so not versed in Mormon history? Anyhow, didn’t know he was that young?

And in answer to the OP’s question… YES. I do believe God can do anything.

God bless!

No one disagrees with you. Of course God could use a 14 year old boy or girl to do pretty much anything.

The question is not what could God do, but rather to one of discerning what it is that God really does. He could have made the speed of light any speed he wanted, but we can still measure it and determine what that speed is. Spiritual Truth is just as concrete as Physical Truth. The first requires God to reveal it to us. The latter we can at times determine through other means.

We do NOT place God in a little box; quite the opposite.😃
