If heaven is real, why do Christians ask God to keep someone alive?

I was talking with an atheist, and he asked me this question, and I didn’t quite know how to answer it. He told me of a man he knew who credits God for saving his life and asked why the man would be “celebrating being denied the chance for eternal bliss with God as soon as possible”. How would you respond?
 
Let’s look at another scenario. At some point a loved one (family or close friend) is leaving for Europe and you won’t see them again for many years. Wouldn’t you want to spend as much time with them as possible before they left? Does that disprove the existence of Europe?
