then why are so many RC clergy homosexuals? If the climate within the clerical state is hostile to homosexuality then how do so many homosexuals end up being ordained. I mean either you purge the church and remain credible or you keep things the way they are and lose any moral authority to discuss the matter.

And what evidence do you have of this? Peer reviewed statistics, please.

Firstly being homosexual itself is not a sin
Sex outside marriage is a sin for anyone, homosexual or not.
Marriage is ordered to procreation and is between a man and a woman.

Secondly do you have evidence for so many clergy being homosexual?

Thirdly what is the protocol for accepting homosexuals into Seminary and onto Ordination?

Many Gay priests and bishops are allowing to the seminary, and ordaining, gay seminarians.

I’ve seen estimates that state that half to almost 2/3 of the western clergy are gay.

This is not a quantified statistical measurement.

Some Catholic clergy say most priests are gay.
Neither is your elephant link.

So for argument’s sake, let’s assume that 10% are active. Even at 10%, how did they get in, stay in, receive protection and are able to go about their merry business?

Whether it is true or not is of no consequence to me. As was already stated, merely experiencing same sex attraction is not a sin.

I’ve wondered before if same-sex attraction is itself a call to the religious life, or maybe the medical field. Since same sex attraction creates an obstacle in the vocation of raising a family, it makes sense to me that it would be easier to discern a religious vocation or working to care for others in a hospital where the crazy hours often put a strain on relationships anyway.

Lets not speculate and in doing so perpetuate rumour and calumny

How about looking at the requirements for acceptance into the Priesthood.

Actually I don’t think there’s any hostility towards homosexuality in the clergy.

The credibility of the Church should be found in it’s teachings and the fruit it produces. It’s unfortunate that the Church’s credibility is suffering because of the poor choices some of it’s clergy have made. It’s understandable though.

This topic has been explored in-depth by Pope Benedict and Donahue/Donoghue of The Catholic League. A study by some NY law firm, into the child sex abuse gives some serious insight into the causes but stop short at calling the spade a spade.

Your search engine can get you the proper results. I don’t know how to link and am too lazy to do so if i did know.

If anger is a sin, why are so many of us angry?
If greed is a sin, why are so many of us greedy?

The way you phrase it, it’s as though you’re first of all casting doubt on homosexual actions (important distinction) being sinful. . .then you’re implying that the vast majority of clergy are the ‘sinners’ they preach against (wildly unproven/improbable statistics and even if true, the sheer number of people who act on a given sin does not invalidate the sin itself. This isn’t a "We have a majority vote here to decide what is and isn’t sinful’ Church).
Third, you don’t get to decide who has moral authority, how they keep it, or how they ‘lose’ it based on the judgment of YOU.

Fourth, Happy Thanksgiving anyway.

There is no speculation, it’s a fact.
Really. Here are some quotes from the two articles.
  • “At any one time only 50% of clergy are practicing celibacy. That was the hypothesis and thrust of A Secret World (1990) and repeated in Celibacy in Crisis (2003)”
    A hypothesis, a guess.
  • “Cozzens estimated that as much as 58 percent of priests were gay”
    Estimated, a guess.
  • His numbers matched previous estimates by sociologists
    And more guesses.
My guess is that these people making these estimates are left wing ideologues who are only concerned in promoting homosexuality.

Same sex attraction is not a sin. It is a disordered sexual desire.

Acting on same sex attraction is grave matter against the sixth commandment.

As to “why are so many…”. First that is speculation on people’s part unless a priest has disclosed their SSA.
