I’m trying to figure this out. Some say that Jesus died to abolish sin and if we believe this we have eternal life. So why do we still try to not sin if Jesus died for this. It’s like saying oh thanks but I don’t really trust that.
Or am I wrong, did he die for some other purpose. Who is right and who is wrong?
Why is everything SO confusing. I don’t know how to act or be and I just feel like giving up because I am so lost and don’t know where to turn for answers.
The bible is so confusing with it’s big words, and then there are so many different religions. WHY?
God is love but yet he gives us rules to follow and if we don’t we are punished. WHY? He seems to big to me and above this. It just seems petty. Like I get the guidelines but love isn’t wanting to see someone suffer, right?
Someone set me straight please and thank you.

If it was up to me I would like to just believe that Christ died and so did sin. Believing this sets you free. Free to love without any restraint or worry.

Hi - I am not a Priest, but the first thing that jumps out to me is to remember that Jesus always forgives but also always commanded to go and sin no more! We must always strive to remove sin from our lives though as weak sinful humans we will always trip up and fail but thankfully, Jesus gave us His loving sacrament of reconciliation through His Church.

God Bless you

I’m just confused because If sin is no more because of Jesus then what are we trying to do. Jesus took the old law with him, so we are judged by our deeds not our sins. Sins no longer exist. Believe this and have eternal life. See it’s hard to believe right?? Thats why you have to have faith in Christ. Am i wrong??

That is not correct - sins still exist - and most of us commit at least venial sins all the time but try through the help of the sacraments to remove those sins from our lives. You are correct in that you have to have Faith in Jesus but you also need to persevere in your walk and then you can have Faith in your assurance of salvation - notice not an assurance of salvation, but rather your Faith in the assurance of salvation. Remember, the gift of being made right with God is strictly a Gift - a Grace - from God - you can do nothing on your own to merit being justified. Even your Faith in Jesus is a Grace - a Gift - from God. And that Faith is not a one time event that happened in the past when you asked Jesus into your life as your personal savior, but that Faith should be a daily and present awareness of your communion with God and because we are given that Gift then we continue by following what Jesus taught us as the Two Greatest Commandments - Love God and Love Neighbor - what we do for the least of us we do for Him…

If you want just a priest to answer it try asking in Ask an Apologist section

They aren’t priest but you wont get a confusing discussion and forgetting to answer you question at the same time. Or scroll down the members list and identify a priest amongst them and post them a private message and they may well respond.

Hang on. You have too many things going on. I’m not a priest either and this may be a bad analogy so someone correct me if you’ve got a better one. Think of the word “penance” and the english word “penitentiary” (penitent thief, if you’d like). I drive drunk and crash into a car killing a child, you go before the judge. You can beg for forgiveness from the court (for violating its law) and the family that you disrupted. They can give their forgiveness to you. But then you still have to go to the penitentiary to “make atonement” for your crime.

Or if your child steals your car and crashes, you can forgive him, but the “stain” of the damaged car still exists. So you punish the child because it is just. So with our heavenly Father.

There is an easy answer to this question.

Adam and Eve committed the first sin, Original Sin, which closed the doors to Heaven. It was a great offense against an eternal and infinite God, rendering it an infinite offense, and since no human could possibly make perfect reparation for an infinite offense, we were essentially all doomed to damnation.

However, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to redeem us. Jesus, by His Passion, made infinite reparation for an infinite offense, and therefore He opened the doors to Heaven; however, we, by our sins, still close ourselves off from God’s grace.

The grace obtained from the Passion is there for the taking, but whether or not we make it to Heaven is DIRECTLY decided on whether or not we accept that grace. Therefore, we do not MERIT Heaven, but rather, we place ourselves on God’s mercy and hope for salvation from the infinite redemption from Christ’s Passion.

So, by the Redemption, Christ defeated all sin, that is, He made it so that sin does not block us from Heaven, but we still have to fight Satan and choose that grace to make it to Heaven.

Look at it this way and it might help!

We are all sinners. If you go through the 10 commandments (‘the law’), have you broken any of them? If you are honest, you will know that you have. So, ‘all have sinned and fallen short’. The only just penalty for this sin is death (Romans 6:23), not just physical death but eternal death (Revelation 20:11-15). God is a just judge.

If you commit some sort of crime and go before an earthly judge, you can say how sorry you are etc, but if the punishment for your crime is, say, a fine of $20, 000 or 2 years in jail, your sorrow is not going to make any difference. The court will still want their money, because that is the punishment. Now suppose a stranger steps in and says ‘Hey, here’s the $20,000 dollars’; the court will accept the money, the debt is paid, and you are free to go, because of the kindness and generosity of this stranger.

Now imagine you are standing before God, accused (justly) of the sins you have committed, the punishment for which is eternal damnation. After all, you freely choose to sin against the law of God, and now is the day of reckoning. You may be extremely sorry, but God is a just judge; Psalm 7:11. What can God accept as a reparation for your sins? Only the blood of the crucified Christ. When the devil accuses you before God, God points to His Son on the Cross. (Romans 10:9-10 For if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.) Jesus Christ has paid the debt to abolish your sin in the eyes of His Father. This is the only possible means of paying the debt of our sins to Almighty God, for sin has been crucified on the cross of Jesus, and now by faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior “we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace” (Ephesians 1:7).

Our sins are forgiven, if we are followers of Christ, and we have repented and believed the Gospel. But that doesn’t mean that sin no longer exists! You don’t have to look far at all to see that sin is very much alive and kicking. However, God has sent us His only Son as a means of our salvation, ‘that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life’ (John 3:15).

Christ Himself did not claim to abolish the Law: 'Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil '.(Matt 5:15) so it holds that we are still to strive to keep the Law. He also said ‘Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.’ It’s quite clear that although He has died for our sins, sin still exists and that we still must do all we can, by the grace of God, to keep His commandments.

I hope this helps you clarify your thoughts. You say you would like to believe that ‘Christ died and so did sin and that believing that would set you free’. This doesn’t make sense. You must know that sin is happening all around you, and within you, and the only way it is destroyed is by the gift of Christ to those who believe in Him. Also Christians are a resurrection people; Christ rose again, having overcome those wages of sin, death. His death and resurrection are the things that have set us free.

Don’t give up searching for God; He wants you to find Him! He comes to meet you while you are still a long way off!
’ Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you’ (Matt 7:7).

God Bless.

ok , thank you all for your replies. Zeno you, I think, got through to me the best. So Christ died for us to BE ABLE to be forgiven of our sins in front of God. I think once you take Christ in it physically and emotionally changes us to want to be better. I can feel it. bless you all!! Keep up the good word and works!

You are confused. I assume you are not Catholic. Nevertheless I would advise you to read the Catechism of the Catholic Church, it is the most complete and reliable Catechism around and I promise it will tell you the truth about, sin, the life of grace, what a true Christian must believe, forgiveness and a lot of other things. That said, you can read it online here or you can buy a copy for about $10.00.
vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/_INDEX.HTM

Of course, since you are not Cathlic you will have to make a few adjustments. For forgiveness of your sins read through the section on the Commandments and examine your conscience as best as you can and meditate on the blessings God has given you through His Son, the suffering his Son did for you and ask his forgiveness. And make a firm resolution not to sin seriously again. Examine your conscience at least once a day and go through the same procedure.

Say your morning, noon, and eveining prayers. Make your examination of conscience at the end of the day. Try to keep Christ in the back of your mind all day, making silent but loving prayers of the heart to him all day as you work, etc.

Christ’s life, suffering, and death atoned for our sins against God and made our salvation possible. But sin remains a fact of life, His death did not end sin. We have to strive daily to overcome the temptations to sin that come our way.

Don’t give up. We can never give up. You will get better if you do as I say, we will pray for you. Linus2nd

‘Taking Christ in’ as you say, it transforms us! We become a new creation. God bless you on your way

Yes Zeno11 answered it very well. Regarding the other questions:

The bible is so confusing with it’s big words, and then there are so many different religions. WHY?

The more you read the Bible, the less confusing it will become.
God is real and so is Satan. Satan wants to confuse us, so we turn away from God, one way to do this, is to have many religions, however remember Jesus said:
“I am the way; I am the Truth and Life.
No one can come to the Father except through me.”
Christianity is the only one that preaches that Jesus is our Savior the others do not!

God is love but yet he gives us rules to follow and if we don’t we are punished. WHY? He seems to big to me and above this. It just seems petty. Like I get the guidelines but love isn’t wanting to see someone suffer, right?

God loves us unconditionally, there are many examples of this in the Bible. The obvious one is that he sent his Son Jesus to save us from sin, to enable us to have eternal life and have a personal relationship with God.

Also in Genesis it states God gave us authority on the earth, to rule it us we wish because he loves us so much. He didn’t make us sign a pre-nup or give us conditions (for example if you don’t do what i want you to do, then i will come down and fix things) if he did then that won’t be an example of unconditional love. That would be like giving someone a birthday present, then telling them that you want it back after a week, not appropriate. Remember only God things come from God. The further we move away from God, the more suffering & evil we will see.

I’m just confused because If sin is no more because of Jesus then what are we trying to do. Jesus took the old law with him, so we are judged by our deeds not our sins. Sins no longer exist. If sins no longer exist, then why would Jesus tell his disciples “whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven; whose sins you retain are retained” ?

Maybe your question is deeper, like why does God require us to avoid sin?

The word to focus on is “covenant.” This is not like a contract, where people exchange things like money and merchandise. In a covenant, people give each other, but there are still conditions. In the Old Testament there are lots of conditions, like starting with the Ten Commandments. In the New Testament, there’s a new covenant and new conditions.

In Judaism, there is a special Sabbath celebration to celebrate the revelation of God’s law in the words of the Torah (first five books of the Bible).

Read Psalm 119, which is the longest Psalm, and it is the most expressive prayer in thanksgiving for the word of God, which shows us God’s will.

“Thy word oh LORD is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path.”

“Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I may not sin against Thee.”

etc.

Protestants have a nice hymn about this:

Thy word have I hid in my heart
Thy word have I hid in my heart
That I might not sin
That I might not sin
Thy word have I hid in my heart

Thy word is a lamp for my feet
Thy word is a light for my path
That I might not sin
That I might not sin
Thy word have I hid in my heart

(or something like this)
