If I don't receive the Eucharist, what do i do?

The times I have stayed in the pew and made a spiritual communion because I had sinned and I had not yet gone to confession were spiritually profound experiences. I felt that God was pleased with my choice.
I stay in the pew also when I feel I am not in the state of grace to receive communion. There are very few people in a church of over 500 that don’t receive…I guess they are all saints and can get through the week without an unkind word to someone, a dirty word or an impure thought.
When I do get to confession on Sat., I only see about 25 people, at most during the hour!

Would you really class those sins you listed as mortal? Remember, only venial sins need be confessed.

Once a while ago, I was mislead by a priest. He told me that during the Consecration, we say the phrase “Lord I am not worthy to receive you under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed”…that even if I missed Confession, if I say those words, my sins are forgiven and it would be okay for me to take the Eucharist.
Actually, what he said is absolutely correct: as it applies to venial sins. That’s an important and essential qualification to make.
In my naivety, I did this a few time and just didn’t feel right about it. I went to Confession with another priest who told me that this was wrong. He said that I had profaned the body of Jesus, time and time again by doing this.
Likewise, that priest was correct, but only as it applies to mortal sins. Again, that distinction must be made.

Both priest were correct. It does seem, though, that they both gave incomplete answers.

It depends on how intense the words & thoughts are. They can be mortal. I don’t want to take a chance.
Many people tell me “I didn’t kill anyone or rob a bank!” I hope God feels the same when they meet Him one day.

Novawar is in RCIA. Meaning the intention is to become Catholic

When Catholics pray, we begin and end with
  • in the name of the Father
  • the Son
  • And the Holy Spirit
As in we make the sigh of the cross

Does the Priest conclude his blessing with ‘Amen’ ? If he does, I wouldn’t say ‘Amen’. Similar to how you don’t say Amen when receiving the Eucharist at an EF Mass, because the Priest says a little prayer which already concludes in ‘Amen’; but you do say it when receiving at an OF Mass because the Priest concludes no such prayer but just says ‘the body of Christ’.

That’s just my logic though and it’s probably perfectly unimportant whether you say ‘Amen’ or not.

Since I’m in an irregular marriage, I can not yet receive the Eucharist. I remain in my pew and pray. I have never really felt excluded,or shamed in not being able to receive it. My eyes remain closed,or downcast, so I wouldn’t know if people were staring anyway.
I have read that faithful attendance at the mass with an earnest desire to receive the Eucharist, imparts a similar grace.

The uncomfortable part comes when I go to the Methodist church with my wife, and son, and they have communion. I don’t participate, because I know it is a mortal sin to do so. I do get some weird looks.

I am also in an irregular situation. Our whole family of 5 (3 children are in RCIA, so also not reveiving) just sit or kneel in prayer and Eucharistic Adoration during communion.

We sit on the far left side. That way others in our pew can get out without climbing over us, and can go through the pew behind (presumably empty) to return to their seats. Nobody appears bothered one bit. In fact, it’s very usual that there are several people not receiving on any given day at our parish.

Ok, so I am registered for RCIA in the fall and have gone to mass. When the priest was giving out the Holy Eucharist I just stayed in my pew and prayed. I felt awkward sitting there, while people all around me were moving out to receive the Eucharist. I just recently watched a mass and realized some people were putting their hands over their chest or mouth and the priest was giving them a blessing. This is great thank you Lord.

So is there anything I have to say after the blessing? ‘Amen’? ‘Thank you Father’?
Ask people in the parish, preferably the priest, but it looks as if the custom in your parish (as in many/most) is to go up for a blessing. You’ll note that many on this forum don’t like this practice, but I encourage you to listen to what the priest and people of the parish you’re attending say instead of to know-it-alls on the Internet (obviously that advice makes this entire post very ironic).
