If it's okay to speed to get to the hospital

He means…

IF it’s okay to speed to get to the hospital, then IS it okay to speed to get to Church.

OP, I speed all the time 😊 However, even I know there is a difference between speeding to a hospital (for an emergency, for which I would ask for help if caught by the Police), and speeding to get to Church (a NON emergency, which has no defense when stopped by the Police). Yes, Church is important, but you can go to a later Mass. Does that answer your question?
 
Last winter in my state a man was speeding his pregnant wife to the hosptial-he got a ticket for 100 bucks, but it was thrown out becasue of the situation. However, he got a stern lecture from the judge.

If you can control the car and not hurt yourself or others, than yes, it’s fine to speed in an urgent situation.

Use common sense.

If getting to the hospital is really an emergency, I think speeding is OK. But not if going to Church. (And DEFINITELY not if going to synagogue since, if you’re Orthodox Jewish, you shouldn’t be driving in the first place!)
 
In an emergency, it is moral to ignore certain rules that apply in normal situations. Sometimes it’s legal. Killing in self-defence is an example. You can’t kill somebody just because you don’t like him or even when he attacks you. But you can kill him if it’s either that or he will kill you. And speeding laws, although important (their general observance by everybody serves to keep the roads safer, saving lives and limbs, and property), are not as important when you’re driving someone to the hospital in a life-threatening situation.

As for making it to church in time, that’s a different situation. First of all, respect the safety of other cars and drivers on the road, or pedestrians, or your own. Secondly, don’t worry about being late if it wasn’t your fault (but you may need to go to a later mass). Thirdly, just go to a later mass instead if you’re more than a couple of minutes late.

Its not legal to speed to a hospital even for an emergency although you would likely be cut some slack in such circumstances if you didn’t cause any accidents on the way.

It is not legal to speed to a Church and there would NEVER be a need to speed to a Church anyway.
 
it is not okay to speed to get to the hospital unless you are driving an ambulance or other emergency vehicle equipped with the proper warning devices. That is what 911 is for.

The question is poorly constructed; since, as framed [if/then], yes or no is correct.

Better:

Is it ever ok to speed to the hospital?

Is it ever ok to speed to the church?

All laws are subject to interpretation, by the perpetrator and society.

No law is outside of interpretation.

It is always ok to speed to the hospital or to the church, if the perpetrator deems it so.

However, of course, society may disagree.

Should the perpetrator be apprehened and charged with the offense of speeding, the courts (society) will decide for themselves, if they agree with the perpetrator.

If they disagree, the perpetrator is convicted, and strong-armed to pay the penalty deemed by those same courts.

On the other hand, the courts may agree with the perpetrator and consider no law to have been “broken.” 🙂

NEVER ?

Someone has just learned that his mother is not only dead, but that her funeral is now taking place. The church service is in process. He might just make it, if he hurries fast enough.

Such a person might consider this a need to warrant speeding.

Though you may not consider this a need, it is fair to say need, like beauty, is in the eye/mind of the beholder. 🙂

It is NEVER okay to speed to a Church.
 
CCC 2290 points to speeding as being objectively gravely immoral, so it’s not really a matter of the state law. However, as with all sins, the situation/context is taken into account as far as culpability. I would say for the hospital it would most likely be venial.

There are no reasons whatsoever that can justify speeding to a Church.
Not being late for a baptism, wedding, funeral, or Mass.
Not even for the example given by you. Nothing justifies endangering innocent lives by speeding.

But sometimes accidents happen and you have to get there and assume that it is the last mass. So if the soul is better than the body, then does it makes sense to speed or not?

Will any answer satisfy you, or will you continue to ask “what if” and hypothetical questions?
 
I got a warning while speeding my wife (who was in labor) to the hospital. I really think the police officer wanted to give me a ticket, but decided against it because of the circumstances. Nonetheless, he still took the time to go back to his cruiser, run my plates, etc. and write the warning.

So, I would say if you need to get to the hospital quickly, call am ambulance. I am pretty sure there is no emergency vehicle available for Church delivery, so I don’t think it is okay to speed to get to Church.
