If life begins at conception, how can chimeras and identical twins be explained?

A friend claims that life doesn’t begin at conception, because a single chimera can (without human intervention) be formed from two fertilised eggs or two early embryos. Two human lives would thereby become one human life.

The same applies to identical twins, formed from the division of a single zygote.

How can I respond?
