If local schools are closed for Swine Flu, is Sunday Mass still obligatory?

I live in an area where the public school system with an 80,000 student body is closed until May 11th. Our local Catholic school is still open, but the diosece (sp) has advised cancelling large events like Cinco de Mayo. My husband is does not want to bring our family to mass this weekend - all of them are quite well attended - with our young children. Is missing Mass this weekend a mortal sin in this case?

That’s really your call. If you have serious concerns that it would be a danger to your family to attend Mass in a full church due to the flu, then you are allowed to miss Mass. You might attend a weeday Mass where there are fewer people.
