So if we read the passage, what is it telling us?

Revelation of John
12:15 And the serpent sent out from his mouth, after the woman, water like a river, so that he might cause her to be carried away by the river.
12:16 But the earth assisted the woman. And the earth opened her mouth and absorbed the river, which the dragon sent out from his mouth.
12:17 And the dragon was angry at the woman. And so he went away to do battle with the remainder of her offspring, those who keep the commandments of God and who hold to the testimony of Jesus Christ.
It seems to be an allegory of the battle between the forces of good versus the forces of evil. The Earth that was created by GOD assists in the struggle by swallowing the river the serpent sent out to drown the woman and after failing he now redirects his anger to her children.
Who are they? The book say they those who keep the commandments from Jesus. Christians perhaps? What do you think?
Does this helps?

Peace!

“And a great sign”…don’t necessarily read it literally. Yes, the woman here can be interpreted as an individual, Mary, but it can also be seen to symbolize the collective of both the faithful of Israel, crying out for the messiah(12:2) and the Church, attacked by the devil for witnessing to Jesus(12:17). Many scholars interpret the fleeing into the wilderness(12:6) as the safe escape of Jewish Christians from Jerusalem when they fled to a place called Pella(11:2).

The woman in Apocalypse/Revelation 12 is applicable to the Church as well as Mary. Usually verses 1 is applied to Our Lady and the rest is either applied to Our Lady or the Church.

Does anyone know of a good book giving the Catholic interpretation to Revelations. I never payed too much attention to the book, but right now I feel it is very important. Also is the epistle of Jude that precedes the book related in any way. Thanks.

Another poster had a beautiful explanation, regarding the woman being Mary. I do feel right now the Devil is going after many.

The Lamb’s Supper by Scott Hahn is a great insight into the Mass as described in the book of Revelations.

Oh, that’s going to be rough. I’ve heard of it but been reluctant to read it as Scott Hanh is a convert. But right now I’m finishing Acts of the apostles and I won’t be like the Pharisees who did not accept Paul because they could not believe in his conversion. This man Scott Hanh May be the modern day Paul. So, I’ll buy that book.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Jesus was well known for using the things of nature to teach about the things of heaven simply because human beings aren’t capable of what is a mystery. Mankind has always respected the earth as a servant of the Creator made to help His children.

I apologize I didn’t mean to offend. May the loving grace of God be with you. I no longer have that mentality. I’m definitely buying the book. The Catholic Church needs more converts as each one brings a wealth of experience and broadens our views.

I am a bit confused here by the transition of Mary to earth. Why did she go down to the earth? It looks like in the very beginning of this chapter she was in heaven. Why didn’t she stay in the heaven?

Well the battle in Heaven is done, that is past although technically speaking it took place outside of our time well before the Universe was created. Jesus said so in the Gospels when HE asserted that he had seen when Lucifer was cast from Heaven. Mary on the other hand has already given birth to Jesus so that is past. The serpent trying to harm her directly also is in the past he could only try when she was on Earth. Which she no longer is, what we have left is the last verse. i.e. The devil battling the Christians who are on earth alive until Jesus returns for the final chapter.
Hope this helps!
Peace!
