My family and I went to the 5 p.m. Saturday Mass tonight for Sunday, but the scheduled priest had an emergency of some kind and couldn’t be there, and no other priest could be found. A communion service with readings was held instead, which we attended.

Does this mean that my family and I should attend a different Mass tomorrow, or did we fulfill our obligation by trying to attend a scheduled Mass?

Hi,

If it is possible for you to attend another Mass, then you are obliged to do so. But Sunday Mass is far more than an obligation; it is the celebration of God’s sacrificial love for us and the greatest thing that happens on the face of the earth.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
