If Mormons are so "Christ centered" then why...

On every mormon ‘temple’ is there a rendering of their angel ‘Moroni’ and not a Cross?

Are there NO new teachings of Jesus recorded in the Book of Mormon?

It is called the “Book of Mormon” and not the 'Book of Jesus Christ"?

Sorry, zerinus and tom nossor and whyme and paul g and thirdnep11, I didn’t realize that I touched upon a taboo concerning your religion.

Let’s squint our eyes and pretend that moroni and his horn is really Jesus jamming with the Nephites on Hill Cumorah.

Not all traditions use a cross on their meeting houses or religious structures. I’m thinking that LDS don’t use the cross for much the reasons some other faith traditions don’t.

The “Book of Mormon” is supposed to have been abriged from other documents and recorded on “gold appearing plates”, by the prophet Mormon. I would think that it’s title means nothing more sinister than it’s “Mormon’s book”, rather like asking why the Book of Jonah isn’t called the “book of God” since it’s in the Bible.

They claim their symbols are ancient, more ancient than the sign of the cross. Also I believe they understand that Christ’s attonement took place in the Garden not on the Cross, therefore the Cross is inconsequential to their faith.

They do have statues and pictures of Jesus though, just not a cross or crucifix.

Yes, all very good but the problem remains. For this new ‘religion’ which claims the Catholic and Orthodox Churches and their separated denominations are all “apostate,” also claims that their ‘scripture’ (which primarily includes the BoM) ‘fulfills’ the Gospel of Jesus.

So, why nothing on their temples to indicate this? Why the focus on an angel (in mormon schema: an elevated being who became an angel) and not on Christ?

Robert, I am not a Mormon…nor am I a Catholic. I have no problem what so ever with how those of the LDS choose to signify their faith in symbols…it’s symbols only…symbols are not sacred in my tradition. People are sacred and only people…not buildings, temples, groves or any other location.

I know they use the angel Moroni…they believe he is the angel in Revelation that had the “everlasting gospel” and proclaimed it to the world…the angel symolizes their belief in that. If they find meaning in particualr symbols, I’m ok with it…I find nothing “sinister” in it…those Mormons I have met have for the most part been kind and considerate.

In my opinion, if we wish to point others to Christ, it is best done by our example and the lives we live…not in symbols that offer no warm hug when one is needed or no word of healing or compassion when one should be given. Christ isn’t found missing in our symbols, but in our actions.
 
Mormons are not focused on Christ for all they remind everyone that the name of their church contains the words Jesus and Christ. Attend a Mormon sacrament meeting and you will hear about writing journals, food storage, Joseph Smith and tithing. Agreed that some talks are about gospel principles - and this is good. But you will not find the God worship and adoration that you find in the Catholic church or the intimacy with Christ of the eucharist. Why ? It is all to do with maturity. The Mormon god wants them to be like him (afterall he was once like them) and so teaches them about Smith, Hinckley, journals and wheat storage. Mormonism rises above the worship and adoration of the legacy religions like Catholicism. God is god to Mormons simply because he got to where he is before them. A Mormon may become a god to others because he gets there before they do.

To an ordinary member the Cross is not there - as posted previously by another person - because they focus on Gethsemane and the rising from the Tomb. However, to the so called Mormon god who attempts to sit in God’s Throne, it is because the Cross instills fear into its “heart” and “soul”. It could not bear to have Mormon temple worship performed under the symbol of the Cross - which is the ultimate sign of his defeat and the victory of Jesus Christ.

And that comes from someone (me) who has been a Mormon for over 20 years and has only just found the truth in the Catholic Church.

I get a warm “hug” every time I gaze upon the Crucifix. I am reminded visually of the profound love that Jesus had for me when He died upon the cross.

Just a note to ya, I just did a one hour visual meditation on the crucifix in our Church this afternoon, It was a humbling experience. I love the Lord Jesus and his Mother Mary.
