If Pregnancy Was Still Called With Child, Would There Be Less Abortions?

I was thinking, what if more people called pregnancy “With Child”? The word “With Child” clearly puts the word child there making a person think of a child, rather than pregnancy, which doesn’t make the person necessarily think of a child. Theoretically, wouldn’t using the term “With Child” instead of “Pregnant” lower the amount of abortions? One clearly says the woman is with a child, the other sounds like a condition, making it easier to separate the woman with the child mentally.

I am bad at trying to say what I want to in words, however. I could easily try to say what I want to say in my head, but when it comes to saying what I want to in words, I encounter a bit of trouble. I hope you can understand what I am trying to say!

It would seem that with ultrasounds showing the humanness of the fetus ,particularly after the first four weeks, that should be enough right there.Sadly, those entrenched in a women’s"reproductive rights" otherwise known as abortion, will never concede this very obvious fact.:(
It will have to be through the outcry and continued efforts and ongoing education of the general populace to effect any changes in abortion industry.

And even before the first four weeks, at the very conception when the zygote comes to be, all biology and embryology books are universal in proclaiming that that is when a new unique human being comes into existence – yet they’re blind to the facts and only care about not having morning sickness or not having to go through a “traumatic experience”.

But of course, not being uncomfortable trumps a human life, right? 🤷

I think the root of your observation/suggestion is a good one. Language makes a difference. What we call things can influence how we perceive things.

I don’t know that trying to move the culture to use “with child” will gain much momentum, though. It certainly succeeds in drawing attention to the humanity of the unborn, but it is also a little more ambiguous than “pregnant”. I am “with child” every time I bring my kids with me to the grocery store. 😛 Plus, I think a lot of people probably find the phrase to be a bit antiquated.

I do think we need to find ways to highlight the humanity of the unborn, even if it is not with this phrase in particular.

Yes, it would. Every word combination creates a different emotional response. In the past, “with child,” “a gift from God,” “we’re going to have a baby” were common. Like Pro-Abortion changing to Pro-Choice. Why? Everybody wants a choice, right? But in this case, the choice is death for the unborn.

Peace,
Ed

I agree that language is important, and it would probably make a difference, but I don’t think it would be a very big difference.

When my wife had her six week scan we saw two heartbeats flickering fast, to us babies but to others just a bunch of cells.

Unfortunately it is those that call it a bunch of cells that take the humanity out of them.

I like the phrase “with child.” In fact it used to be considered rather rude to use the word “pregnant,” rather than saying, she is with child. When one uses such a phrase, there is no doubt that one is expecting, yes–a child!
