BennyBoy89,

Sounds like a plan; however, one minor flaw in your logic…if the old Patriarchs retire, then the Pope of Rome retires too because he is one of the old Patriarchs!

😉

The Pope may be a Patriarch, but I’m not seeing multiple Patriarchs of Rome and the West governing their various rites. He’s the head of the Church of Rome, but he’s also the Head of the Church Universal.

In the event of the Orthodox and Catholics coming into communion, the patriarchs remain as they are, the heads of their own respective Churches. The Patriarch of Rome, as Bishop of Rome and successor of Peter will have primacy.

Why not, after a 3 day vigil of prayer and fasting, have a child pull a name out of a chalice?

That’s how the Coptic Pope of Alexandria is elected.

And that’s how the Patriarchate of Moscow was restored.

This may be off the thread a little, but does anyone know who (which) Apostle headed up the church in the Biblical Philadephia.
I know that Timothy was sent there but did he continue then and if so, what church is there now. I used to know where the biblical Philadephia was in modern names but I have forgotten.😃

So anyway, to leave off, considering the situation that we find ourselves in, who would be the Patriarch of the various sees in your opinion and why? Why system would be best suited to deciding this quesiton in the case of heated dispute so that we can unify?
The orthodox patriarch would have to be an elected official approved by an assembly of canonical bishops.

Place all the children in a box, have the Patriarch pick one out.

Duh🤷
rolls eyes Oh for the love of…YEAH, but, HOW would a Patriarch get chosen for THAT position? OH! Would we put all Patriarchs in a box and have somebody pick a Patriarch to pick the child to pick the name of the Patriarch who would get to sit in the Seat that Christ Built?

Is that true, even now, in the case of an unresolved case, the Patriarchs ask the Pope?

So, basically, there would be all the Heads of the Churches as now, but, they would all be subject to the Pope? Would they be above the Cardinals and the Bishops/Archbishops of the Bishoprics here in the States and such?

At least this is one thread that hasn’t resulted in toe-crushing, and throwing people out of windows.

On a side note, how would the election of a Pope work if reunification did take place? Would it only be the Latin Rite that elected him or would the Patriarchs and some of the Metropolitans be made Cardinals and elect the new Pope in Conclave with the rest? And would the Patriarchs be given a higher/the same precedence as the Cardinal Bishops or would they just be counted among the Cardinal Priests?

One would assume it would still be just the Latin rite to elect him. They are, after all, electing their own Patriarch. In essence, nothing has changed in the nature of the papacy, so it is easy to go back in history and see how they elected the pope pre-schism.

Canon law establishes that Patriarchs and major archbishops are to gain the Cardinal Honor as soon as a Cardinal’s Titular See is open, in the order of Cardinal Bishop or Cardinal-priest.

So newly reunited patriarchs would quickly become voting members of the conclave.

Still, they would be a small slice of the cardinals.
