If social distancing and masks are not necessary in thousand-person clusters of protesters, then WHY ARE ANY BUSINESSES, MASSES, AND ACTIVITES STILL S

It was the most consequential policy decision of our lifetime. The lockdowns destroyed potentially 53% of our GDP, paralyzed our health care system, shut down our education system, and induced a physical and mental health crisis. Yet we were told it was absolutely necessary for our survival because of the most dangerous virus ever that required these actions until there is a vaccine or a cure. Well, it appears that we found a cure, though not a medical one.

The media’s cult-like devotion to quarantine, wearing masks, and the mind-numbing trope of “social distancing” has been repudiated within hours of the first sacred “protesters” smashing and burning storefronts in Minneapolis last week. They have allowed them to break curfews and gather in the thousands on top of each other. Politicians have even joined in with them, and there have been group hugging and kneeling sessions with the police.

Schools are closed and businesses are driving themselves crazy trying to comply with restrictions. Weddings are still canceled in many of these cities, and funerals were only being conducted graveside in some states. We are walking in the heat with masks to stores because we were told if we don’t do all this, there will be a massive second wave and we will all die. Most of these cities were still under phase one of the shelter-in-place order, and every state still banned large gatherings.

Yet somehow, when you have thousands of protesters on top of each other in every major city or gathering in a church in D.C. to set it on fire rather than pray in it, there is no longer a concern of mass spread of this super-deadly pandemic of the millennium?

A new serology test shows that even in New York City, the implied infection fatality rate was only 0.3%.

Not only was the fatality rate exaggerated because it mainly killed those in nursing homes, but the rate of transmissibility was also overstated because it was mainly transferred in hospitals and nursing homes. According to the British government, “The overall reproduction number, R, is in the range 0.5 to 0.9."

ABC News looked at the 21 states that eased restrictions on May 4 or earlier and found “no major increases in hospitalizations, deaths or % of people testing positive in any of the 21 states.” Also, the reopening of schools in 22 countries has not led to any increases in deaths or infections among students and staff.

Thus, the lockdown scam is over. Feel free to enter a church; just bring a match instead of a prayer book. Feel free to enter a store, just bring a mask. . . . After all, it’s the symbolism and what’s in your heart that counts. Science and law be damned.

At the beginning of all this nobody knew how it would spread. It was new, thus the name “novel.” Safety measures are being adjusted as we learn more about how the virus behaves. Articles like this are nothing more than whiny hindsight armchair quarterback backseat driver stuff. I believe authorities were and are doing the best job with the information they have at any given point.

The duplicity among certain media and a certain political party’s government officials is obvious. Protests against lockdown bad; protests against “police brutality” good. Protests against lockdown spread deadly virus. Protests against “police brutality”…never mind the virus or the lockdown.

The irony is lost on certain people - Government control is awesome unless we (Progressives) say it’s not.

Not sure why the relatively benign discomfort of wearing a mask has to be turned into a political, rather than a moral issue.

The evidence, once sorting through the political clap-trap, is clear: Simple masking protects others from the inadvertent spread of the virus, rather than protecting the wearer.

So, if personally, you feel your short term relative comfort is more important than thinking of the more vulnerable, don’t wear a mask…but also, don’t blame your discomfort on a political movement or governmental policy.

The moral lesson I had ingrained in me by a wise senior enlisted when I was in the military was, “Do what’s right, not what is comfortable”.

Government cannot legislate behavior, so do what your conscience tells you. And, hopefully, nothing negative will come of it, not just for you, but for your neighbors.

In most of the US, the local authorities have issued guidelines, asking people to take care to protect their fellow man through simply wearing a piece of cloth over their mouth/nose and keeping a 6 foot distance from each other. There are stronger enforcement for health department regulated/licensed businesses like restaurants, salons, child care, medical offices where the owner can be fined for noncompliance.

Other than that, no one is arresting people for having a BBQ or a birthday party or a church service. Thank God, our Bishops wish to protect the least of those among us and have put restrictions in place for parishes.

Every protest I know has encouraged people to wear masks and keep a distance from others. That people choose to disregard these safety measures is the same as the person who refused to wear a mask at Trader Joe’s last week, their poor choices do not break a law.

My state has seen significant increases since stage 1 re-opening, as have more than 20 states.

Would you kindly link me to a news source (not somebody’s blog) where that journalist says “never mind the virus” wrt protesting?

Here’s two, from CNN and US News and World Report. They don’t say explicitly “never mind the virus” but they do cite a letter from public health experts saying they believe the potential benefits from the protests justify the risk of infection. Both articles quote from the letter saying:
However, as public health advocates, we do not condemn these gatherings as risky for COVID-19 transmission. We support them as vital to the national public health and to the threatened health specifically of black people in the United States.
I think The Atlantic had a good analysis of how the media is covering this:

There’s a lot of people who are going to get very, very sick as a result of these protests. Many of them are going to be left with permanent damage to their lungs or other organs, or dead. And it’s not just the protesters themselves who are at risk, but anyone they may pass the virus on to.

I think a lot of people are under the impression that just because the lockdowns are ended in many places, the threat is largely behind us, when that is clearly not the case.

There does appear to be a strong political aspect to how the virus is being covered, with both the left and the right downplaying its severity when it suits their agenda. But this is a very real threat to human life. Almost every country in the world recognizes that now. And it’s a shame that in America, our media (on both sides of the political spectrum) has become so twisted by political agendas that it’s almost impossible for anyone to learn the facts about anything.

The fact that (some, or even many) protesters don’t practice social distancing in no way proves that social distancing is unneeded.
The fact that (some) protesters don’t wear masks in no way proves that masks are unneeded or useless.

BLM protests are not evidence against the need for anti-coronavirus measures.

I get what you’re saying, but I think it could be argued that many protesters of the unjust Floyd death are not wearing masks (or social distancing) largely because they’re not being overly criticized for it by leftist media or leaders.

Most of the protesters (but certainly not all) are well-meaning people, and I don’t think they’re endangering anybody on purpose.

I’m not sure which test that is referring to, but many of those tests have been shown to be severely flawed.

I was reading an analysis of the New York serology tests on another forum for experts in econometrics and data science, and they showed that some of the numbers coming out of New York would imply that greater than 100% of the population had already been infected, which is clearly impossible. That implies something is wrong with the test.

In my city everyone who goes to the protests wears a mask 🤷‍♀️

But protests aside, masks help prevent inadvertent virus spread to other people, they’re not there to protect yourself. It’s an act of charity to wear one. I have multiple family members who are medical professionals working in the field and they’ve seen firsthand how devastating this virus can be. I’m not sure why everyone keeps turning it into some conspiracy. You can’t control what other people do in terms of preventing virus spread, but you can control your own behaviors to protect others’ health.

In my city many of the protesters wear masks, and there have even been protests that specifically involves social distancing. However, if you’re going to come out and protest against something, I think police brutality is a much worthier target of protest than not being able to get a haircut.

What it calls into question is whether the leftist media (along with Governors who continue to keep anything shut down or limited) ever actually believed that masks and social distancing are necessary.

On the other hand, I hope these leftist media, mayors, and Governors don’t consider these protesters and associates lives to be disposable, while encouraging “risky behavior.”.

Without considering the rationale for shutting down or allowing either…

…the protests just did a better job mobilizing support. If hundreds of thousands of businesses and churches across the nation had organized to open at the same time and stay open for weeks no matter whether they were arrested, tear gassed, or jailed they would be widely permitted too.

Good point. I hope we don’t see a sudden surge in covid-19 cases as a result of leftist media, mayors, and Governors cheerleading for the protesters, and not warning them about social distancing and masks.
