If social distancing and masks are not necessary in thousand-person clusters of protesters, then WHY ARE ANY BUSINESSES, MASSES, AND ACTIVITES STILL S

If you look at the actual response by the authorities to the anti-lockdown protests a couple weeks ago and the current protests, the former group definitely fared better, even when they entered government buildings armed and directly confronted police. The comments made about them in (some) media may have been nastier, but in terms of actual treatment and what was “permitted,” well, we have pictures and video of both.
I was highlighting the double standard in the quote. Not commenting on how the protesters were treated.
Again, whatever.
Why don’t you think there is a double standard?

Why don’t you think there is a double standard?
Why is it important to you whether I agree or not? I am perfectly happy for us to disagree and just leave it at that, as indicated by my choice of words.

I’m curious about how multiple people reading the same thing and some see a clear double standard and others don’t and trying to understand how it can be read as not having a double standard.

multiple people reading the same thing and some see
With the example of a multitude of interpretations of Scripture leading to multiple schisms and new denominations arising even now, you wonder how different people see a recently written letter that actually isn’t nearly that important differently?

With Protestants I can at least understand why they interpret Scripture the way they do, even if U disagree. With that document I can’t and would like to.

If it is not sufficient to know that opinions and interpretations differ, then I cannot help further.

Do you really believe that the virus does not affect people who are protesting or attending the funeral of Mr. Floyd?
Still trying to understand this line of thinking. The official BLM website directs people to the Surgeon General website
https://blacklivesmatter.com/coronavirus-prevention/ (warning, this page contains language that is critical of Mr Trump, so, don’t read it if that will take away your peace of soul).

In every social media post I’ve read about organizing protests, there are clear instructions to practice social distancing and wear masks. Will there be people who ignore that? Yep, same as the folks refusing to practice distance/masks in stores, restaurants, churches, offices.

I think police brutality is a much worthier target of protest than not being able to get a haircut.
decided based on competing priorities and what is best for the greatest number at the time
These are examples of why I recommend all Americans should diversify their media intake. Some otherwise intelligent and well-meaning people are not even aware of the following week-ending May 16 unemployment report:

The Labor Department report referred to above, which covered up to the week ending May 16, pushed the nine-week total of losses since states directed residents to stay at home and required nonessential businesses to nearly 39 million unemployed.

Even for people who disagree with (and almost hate) the following, I recommend Fox News 8PM-11PM any day, podcasts Mark Levin, Dan Bongino, and Candace Owens, as well as websites like Breitbart and thebonginoreport. This way, you’ll be exposed to important facts that the monolithic left-wing media barely covers or ignores.

Is there any evidence of overcounting
Yes there is from my discussions with people who work at the local hospitals.
So what is the “real” numbers? Of course mistakes are made. Over, under, or canceling out are all possibilities. But evidence is not “I heard…” If the actual numbers cannot be mathematically extrapolated by unbiased means, then anything other than acting on the numbers we actually have is simply not prudent. Word of mouth is no better than website op-eds like Breitbart and Huffington Post.

The lockdowns destroyed potentially 53% of our GDP, paralyzed our health care system, shut down our education system, and induced a physical and mental health crisis .
Point of clarity, Covid-19 negatively impacted our GDP. Data shows that foot traffic and people movement clearly dropped off before any lockdowns were imposed. I get that people are frustrated, but the virus is the culprit, not the government officials who are trying to protect the people.

To answer your question, masks and social distancing is necessary and those clusters who are protesting the murder of George Floyd are making, what I would consider, a risky health gamble. The reason for their protests is very serious… I guess they are making that choice.

No scam, no conspiracy… The doctors and health professionals say wear a mask and social distance… we should stick with them.

I recommend staying away from all of those commentators and websites… and the left wing guys too. Fox / Breitbart / Levin, etc. are the equally bad, but opposite of MSNBC and other severely biased, tabloid media.

What media source would you recommend?

I’ve found Real Clear Politics will take a subject and give you one article from a conservative source and one from a liberal source. The reader can then read both and form their own conclusions.

Wow. Which of the 110,000 do you think aren’t dead? Is there any evidence of overcounting, conspiracy sites notwithstanding?
As i said there was over counting and here is another verification from someone who works in a hospital.
I work in a hospital lab (and we do the counting!). Absolutely, errors have been made, and cases counted several times. No one will ever know the mess behind the scenes–that’s not the kind of story that any journalist will break because it would mean the end of his/her job. It’s just not the kind of thing that the public should know because it would cause panic and distrust of the medical world.
But the WHO has caused panic in the outside world. Take a look at the disaster of 35 million people thrown out of work in the USA.
And this:

Many small businesses in our area have just shut down forever. They will never come back. There is a huge dumpster outside with the trash left after the shutdown of the business. They have gone bankrupt and just cannot make the payments if the government does not allow them to function.

This was not a funeral mass (where the Bishop can enforce regulations). This is just like people at Trader Joe’s or at the VFW hall or at 1st Baptist Church, there are going to be people who refuse to wear a mask or who refuse to distance. The organizers of the funeral could have enforced PPE, it seems they did not (and no, I do not make it a practice to watch funerals other than state funerals or funeral masses).

That is disheartening. In our area, both federal and state funding has helped small businesses stay afloat with forgivable loans/grants.

You’re right, real clear politics will give you both sides… I have mostly tuned out of mainstream media like Fox and MSNBC CNN etc. I have found that WSJ, The Atlantic, The Associated Press, PBS News, NPR and BBC tend to be LESS biased than the hyper polarized one’s like Fox and MSNBC. Still a slant, but not nearly as outrageous or divisive.

I think you’re smart. Hyper-polarized is a good way to describe those channels/websites.

I go to foundational sources.

If we are talking about some piece of legislation before Congress, I go and read the text of that legislation on the appropriate .gov website. If I am interested in Congressional debate, investigations, I watch those on CSPAN.

Every government, national, state, local has a website with reports and documents. Every agency from the WHO to UNOS to the EPA and the ASPCA have information at our fingertips.

I use this sort of resources to learn what is happening. If there is a rumor “so and so said thus and such”, I search until I find the primary source.
