If someone asked you how to start a true Marian devotion, what would you tell them?? Assume the person is Catholic, familiar with Marian dogma, but not how to do a proper “devotion”. Thanks, would love to hear everyone’s take!

depending on whom you are talking to - the most basic thing is to call her name at least once a day. 🙂 Next level is - one Hail Mary per day, and the number of Hail Mary goes higher later …and becomes a rosary.

For those who want to read, somebody here suggested to read book written by St. Louis de Montfort and think about Total Consecration to Mary.

Get an Icon of Mary holding her Son. Meditate on her life, especially her at the foot of the Cross. Talk to her as you would your own Mother, tell her how you feel.

What books and prayers would you recommend besides the Rosary??

I would teach them to pray the rosary. Is this a trick question?

And don’t forget The Memorare…

Is this person a mother herself?

Not at all. I already know the grace of the Rosary and wanted more ideas.
I see!

Okay, are you looking for theology? I have a great choice for that on a book.

Prayers? you gotta be kidding! There are tons of them!

I willl be back, sorry I read that other post and thought this was a joke, and I was dead serious about the icon, and well…

No problem!
But, remember- these prayers are IMHO, very personal to the individual. There are some who are not comfortable (depending on their formation and understanding of Mary)

SO, you have to be very careful.

Some of these prayers, are not for everyone. (I say this meaning, I wish they were, but sadly some dont understand the proper veneration of Mary, so, its dicey):o

I have one I like upstairs that is written by HF when he was not HF and Hans von Balathsar… (who I am NOT crazy about on the matters of HELL) but, on Mary- he is dead on IMHO.

👍

I will get it now, since I understand what you are looking for I think?

In my personal opinion, the Hail Holy Queen is beautiful for growing devotion to Mary in the proper light and understanding.

I have a picture of Mary where she looks so pleading, so sorrowful, that sometimes, when in view of it, if I feel the urge to sin I glance at it and it acts as an almost immediate protection against sinning. How could I sin knowing she’s begging me not to?

Contemplate what she felt at the foot of the Cross. How did she feel at the presentation at the temple? (I always imagined she was very fearful in those first few years of Our Lord’s childhood, wondering if someone was going to suddenly appear and harm Him). How’d she feel the night of the Last Supper? On hearing of His ressurrection?

The Church at the Source

Hans Urs von Balthasar
Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

I paid 15.95 for it, at a local bookstore.

Its put out by Ignatius press, and I highly reccomend it.

Thanks I’ll check it out. Is it arranged such that it would be good reading in Adoration? Like can a page stand on it’s own as sort of a 1-page prayer or story?

If not, anyone know of a Marian prayer book like this? Maybe something that includes the story of what was known back when as the Dormition?

Oh, probobly not, you could piece some things together and print it off and take it with you though.

I cant believe I did not post scriptures! Have you ever thought of maybe taking all the scriprural references to Mary, and silently contemplate each one?

If that kind of thing is for you I will gather up the verses I can and post them, okay?

Dont forget the Magnificat, Hail Holy Queen, The Litany of Our Lady, The Memorare, Reliance on Our Lady, Prayer to the IC, Our Lady of the Rosary, Our Lady Help of Christians, Comfort of the Afflicted, Queen of Peace, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart…

All those prayers are in my old Bible. Pre-vat 2. I can try to hand type them, if there is one on the above list you dont have.👍

Oh thank you both! Hellisreal, don’t burn your fingers off typing…these prayers you listed plus JohnP’s links will help much!!

👍
