As always, only God and God alone can know if any particular act constitutes mortal sin. We can never know for sure. We can be pretty darned sure, but never absolutely sure.
Addiction could impair a person’s free-will consent. If consent is not complete, an act cannot be mortally sinful.
But this also opens up the possibility that the person is not doing enough to try to overcome the addiction - which would be a sin of omission, and possibly mortal. If a person is an alcoholic and gets drunk every day but does nothing to try to overcome his alcoholism, he could be guilty of mortal sin - not necessarily because he gets drunk, but because he neglects to get help. He’s just using his addiction as an excuse to do what he wants to do, and he doesn’t *want *to overcome it because he likes getting drunk.

I have the same kind of questions myself. For example, masturbation is a mortal sin, however in order for something to be mortal, it has to be done freely. Would sexual desire lesson ones moral culpability? If so one could use the same argument for fornication? What about your normal 12 year old boy who is masturbating 5 times a day, is that a mortal sin? If so, he would have to go to confession every week before mass in order to not be in a state of sin, and what happens if he dies during the week?
Another one I have heard that I have a real problem understanding is suicide. On paper it is a mortal sin, however the only way I could see it being mortal (meeting the requirements of a mortal sin) is if I, in a normal state of mind, shot myself in order to anger God. Why? Because if I am in horrible pain, I cannot think clearly, same if I am depressed and sad. So it is a mortal sin that cannot be a mortal sin?

No thank you. The 2-3 times a week seems more plausible, the 2-5 times a day is not normal. Besides, normal in our society seems to be whatever people determine feels best. I digress. My statement still stands, if you are masturbating 5 times a day, something is wrong. Might I ask why you are following me around the board trying to fight with me about everything I say? I was hoping for an answer to my whole question, not a pointless debate over how many times a normal young teen boy does or does not masturbate…No thank you. I agree but you might be surprised at the number of posters in these forums that claim you can masturbate without any lustful thoughts!!so no clear answer…well i tried.
