If someone practices yoga (the spiritual way) can one be friends with them?

One last question:

So can you be friends (in the chummy way, not in the “all humans are naturally friends” way) with anyone?

And assuming that you can’t be friends with certain practitioners of the occult or those who are spiritually/physically dangerous, then what degree of involvement in the occult or degree of separation from you is a condition for you being their friend? What degree of danger is too much?

No, a Catholic cannot be friends with anyone-ANYONE. When you meet people, act surly and unpleasant. If they ask you for simple things, like what time it is or something-then, even though it’s discouraged-you may answer them. Keep it to one syllable words. If they ask for anything else, kick them in the shins and run away screaming in Latin.

Okay, time for a little tough love.

Seriously, Fakename, contact a priest and a therapist. Rapidly. Some of your questions and responses aren’t “scrupulous” they are downright weird. Are you doing it just to seek attention? I sort of hope you are, because if your not…well, dang…

Could you perhaps follow your own advice and “lighten up?” Seriously, there are nicer ways to get your point across, rather than being sarcastic and making fun of the OP. Surprised he is even bothering to ask any questions here at all.

I don’t think Rascal mispoke at all. Infact he is quite sensitive to the fact that the OP may be suffering from some kind of mental deficiancy that causes to ask such questions.

The simplest tenants of our faith are the commandments and the beautitudes, one of which extoll us to visit the imprisioned. If we are to love those who are murders and thieves in prision we can certany be friends with someone who practices an excercized based religion.

And we are allowed to be concerned about people who seem not to follow that rational train of thought.

If we only spoke to individuals of the same faith as ourselves this world would be a very boring place. Appreciate their faith, treasure your own and enjoy your friendship, I have friends of all faiths colours and creeds and I think I have a wonderful life and am still loved by our lord x

Um, I did try to “lighten up” by using sarcasm.

Anp1215, you’ve quoted me several times on various threads-it’s clear you don’t like me or my delivery, that’s fine. Your entitled to to your opinion.

Sadly though, I’m entitled to mine as well.

It’s very clear to me that Fakename, with all their posts, needs help beyond what we can do here. Maybe you don’t like me saying so, again, that’s fine. But there comes a time when you need to understand that coddiling people when they ask truly, truly bizzare questions does not work. Perhaps it’s not healthy to ask these questions on the internet all the time? Maybe it’s a sign of something else? Drama queen? Wasting our time? I don’t know, I can’t read minds. I honestly think it’s not healthy to ask these type of questions they do. I say it out of friendship and love-not out of malice.

Part two of your post-why do people ask questions on this site? Are you serious? People ask bizzare and nutty questions on this site all the time. That’s their right, it’s a free forum. It’s also my right to speak my peace. I dont’ think it’s healthy to worry about certian things that people bring up here.

God bless. Have a good Thanksgiving.

Sorry, this “quote” feature is hay-wire for me. (1) I’m not sure how inclined anyone would be to answer my questions, given that they think I’m insane. But rest assured, even if I was insane, it doesn’t follow that I can’t follow a simple argument or else what would be the final cause of my curiosity? (2) I’m not at all attention-seeking so don’t worry on that score.

My next question is what proof do we have that it would be okay, everything-being-equal, to have friends who dabbled in the occult? For me it seems that although we can be friends with non-Catholics, to the extent that people are dangerous however, common sense dictates that we should not be friends. But non-Catholics who know magic or who are close to demons are dangerous so we should not be friends with everyone and especially the spiritually dangerous. But again yoga=demonic influence so you can see where that syllogism is going.

Which brings up an interesting question viz. the good samaritan. If the person who you want to help, threatens danger to you presently or at some future time, then are you obliged to help him?

It didn’t seem “light” to me, just patronizing.

Which ones?-
it’s clear you don’t like me or my delivery, that’s fine. Your entitled to to your opinion.
I don’t know you, and I have no feelings of like or dislike towards you, or anyone else on CAF. I reserve those feelings for people I have actually met in person.

If you want to say that, OK. I was mainly referring to the beginning of your post.

I don’t know what part of my post this is referring to.

You too.

I agree. I said so in a previous post.
And we are allowed to be concerned about people who seem not to follow that rational train of thought.
I realize. I just don’t think a heavy dose of sarcasm is needed to get one’s concerns across.

Again though, why should we befriend people who practice the occult; for they seem to be too dangerous? Are they not as dangerous?

any arguments?

I can’t stand many of the people who practice the occult, mostly beucase they’re crazy feminist hippies who believe that they can channel mother earth. I find that a bit wackadoodle and tend to not involve myself.

That being said, I don’t walk up to someone and say, “Hi my name’s purple, do you worship Satan?”

We are not called to walk into the middle of a sance and start hugging people and handing out birthday gifts, just to live normally. If we meet a person at work or school we are called to be friendly and some of those people become our friends. It is typically during the friendship that you talk about these sort of things. I have a very dear friend who was into witchcraft. Slowly, she’s come back to the church through the example of good and lovign people. There’s a phraze in modern occult following…“washed-up christian” apparently most of their members are not born into the occult, rather left christianity becuase of the hyprocracy and judgementalness. I really can’t blame them for that, seeing the sort of questions you ask.

Again, sorry. My quote function doesn’t work at all (I’m going to have to rectify that someday). Now let me also apologize for seeming judgmental; by temperament I’ve never been particularly given to what most would call amiability. Nonetheless a certain amount of judgment is necessary in human life -figuring out what is the necessary degree is where the trouble begins (and ironically that’s sort of what this thread is about -judging people viz. friendship).

But let me continue to satisfy my curiosity re:the friends one can have. (1) perhaps we’re equivocating on the word “friendship”. When you say “friends” do you mean friendship for the good, or friendships for the useful, or friendships for shared activities? (2) If you mean friendship for the good, I’m still rather confused since I don’t know a good way of avoiding this objection namely, why should a good man associate with a bad man or why should God associate with the devil? If one really could be friends with anyone, then why would there exist an admonition similar to the one I just wrote (what fellowship exists between light and dark?)? Wherefore it follows that the ideal friendship necessarily is a friendship between two persons where at least one is not dramatically worse than the other. But there clearly comes a cut-off point, right or wrong and why?

Again though, I don’t think I’ve gotten an answer that satisfies me regarding the possibility of friendship with dangerous persons. We probably shouldn’t hand out gifts at a seance, but if that’s so, then people shouldn’t say that we can be friends with everyone. Where is that cut-off point?

Finally, I ask in all seriousness, I’m not trying to advance an agenda or thesis of my own, I’m here purely to learn. 👍

I think “on friendly terms” would be a good term. For example, I probably wouldn’t be best buddies with someone who worships the Devil, mainly because I don’t think we’d have much in common, not because I would be afraid of him trying to cast a spell on me or something. (I also want to add that true Satan worshipers are not incredibly common.) I would say in the case of those who are into the occult, don’t let your friendship with them overlap with your faith. What I mean by that is, you should not attend a seance or black mass or something with them. But, if they are a genuinely nice person, it would be ok to go out to lunch with them or something like that, but don’t get involved with their religious practices. I hope perhaps you get what I’m trying to say. If you have a question, feel free to PM me.

With that, I’m bowing out of this thread!

“You didn’t answer my question.
Are you saying or implying Catholics should only have friends who are Catholic?”

As I said earlier, I’m not advancing a position but I’m rather asking a question.

But if you wish to know my thinking, then I’ll tell: in principle one should have good people as friends, but some people are dangerous for some reason (one of these being that associating with them might get you too close to devils). So you shouldn’t have these people as friends.

You can have friends with anyone who isn’t dangerous to you, be they Catholic or not, however Catholics who are good Catholics should be the ideal friends. Again though, one doesn’t have to have Catholic friends.

How do you define “dangerous to you”?

To Thistle: How do you define “dangerous to you”?

Reply: having a high chance to hurt you spiritually or physically.

So if I have a son who is a drug addict who steals and maybe hurts someone to get money or if he is an atheist and very anti-Catholic you are saying I should abandon him?

Jesus befriended all such people. Do you think he wants us to do less?
