If the 12 apostles did not belong to the Catholic church, as many protestants claim, and the apostles did not belong to any one Protestant church, as catholics claim, then, to what church, in the world today, did the apostles belong?

The Orthodox Church of course 😃
Hahaha. Geographically, yes, I will have to say this is right. Remember that the East-West split didn’t occur until 1054, however. Besides, until that time the Orthodox and Catholic Churches were one, for all intents and purposes. Btw, I hope to live to see the day the East and West are reunified – as well as the end to the progressivist heresies:)

I would have to say, to answer the question of the OP, if Catholics, Orthodox, and Protestants are all wrong, it would have to be the great lost religion of Atlantis! 😉

Jesus our Lords peace be whit You.
First,I like a joke my self, but when it comes to matter that has to do whit the Church,it is improper. And even moore when some one ask a question that may be ever so stupid,he still has the right to the best ansver he can get. I am offended by jokes towards any religion, not only catholic faith. A good joke now and then during the day is OK,I do so myself, but not when it comes to forums like this.
And Your question is not stupid, and will try to ansver You in the best way I can and I am sorry for those ansvers that wos a bit out of line.
All apostles did belong to the Catholic Church, back then it had no name,or no real organisation, that came first a few hundred year later. As we know from the Bible,Jesus gave St.Peter the “keys to heaven” (Matt.16:17-19) and at the same time “start” the Catholic Church. So all 12 apostles did belong to the church that now are known as the Catholic Church. So there is no “if’s”. I wish this wos what You needed to know, moore facts You find in my favorit book, and I do want you all to daily read atleast one chapter, and before you send a question here, the Holy Bible or the Catechism.

The Twelve Apostles–all Jews, initially–comprised, with other faithful disciples, the Church of Jesus Christ which, in its infancy, would not have been known by any other name. In fact, it wouldn’t even have been formally known as anything during Christ’s earthly journey. The whole of the Church would have regarded itself merely as friends and followers of the Lord, never referring to themselves as “Church” until later.

In time, this group of followers and believers in Jesus Christ–the Christian Church–had its troubles, with some Christians believing this, and others believing that. Some Christians, because of these disagreements, split away from the main Church, forming their own. This happened many times. But such a break-away Church would not be an authentic Church: the break-away Churches were not the Church founded by Christ, but were formally separated from it.

In time, the original Church of Jesus Christ began to be referred to as the “Catholic” Church (the Universal Church): that is to say, the original and authentic Church of Jesus Christ that He founded, comprised of all those local Christian communities everywhere that are united together under the Church’s universally recognized authentic leadership.

Protestantism would not even be heard of until Martin Luther published his 95 theses in the year 1517.

Jesus already had in place the feasts, Priesthood the temple etc. Did he and his Apostles view themselves as starting a new Church during his ministry?

They knew that it was a new kind of organization. At first, it was a subset of Judaism, much like the Essene movement, and other movements within Judaism.

Later, and especially when Gentiles became Christians without at the same time becoming Jews, (that is to say, without circumcision and without being required to keep kosher) it became a separate religion from Judaism, still headed by Peter together with the Apostles.

They were all practicing Jews. They could not “belong” to any other church, Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, or otherwise, since none of those yet existed. They did not worship Jesus, they worshipped God (Yahweh, the “Father”), and considered Jesus “Son of God” or “Messiah”.

You do realize that the Son of God and God Himself are one and the same right? Please read this article that I made last night. I have attached it to my post. It is far from being perfect but I feel that it is orthodox in nature and that it does defend the fact that Jesus is God.

Jesus and the 12 Apostles were Jews, so I would say they belonged to the Jewish faith. I’m not sure that being a Jew is the same as being in a “church”…at least it seems strange to say someone belongs to the Jewish church. 🤷
The original followers of Christ were mainly Jewish too, but there were a few that were non-Jewish.
Since Jesus and His followers were rejected by the Jewish leaders, I suppose you could also call them Jewish heretics.

Yes, the early Christians were considered a Jewish Sect, not a brand new religion

And Christ said, “And you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my Church. and the gates of hell shall never prevail against it”

And Peter who taught St Ignatius wrote down the word Catholic Church before he was fed to the Lions with his followers.

Christ founded his own Church, the Catholic Church. Based of his own teachings, Gods teachings. Since is is God.

What we do have is all other denominations falling away somewhere between the 4th and 8th Ecumenical Council. Yet still trying to maintain somehwhat of a belief in the original teachings of the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ, the Catholic Church.

Are you sure they claim that? That’s news to me. I was a Protestant for more than 30 years and never heard that before.

What they claim is that there was no official form of Christianity at the time of the Apostles, and that being Protestant is just as good as being Catholic, since both religions are man-made, anyway.

Most Protestants would not say or believe that Jesus started the Catholic Church and made Peter to be the first Pope of a long line of Popes that runs until modern times, with Pope Benedict XVI as his direct successor.

If they believed that, then they would have to become Catholic, or else explain how it’s okay to belong to a Church that was not actually founded by Jesus, when Jesus’ Church is sitting right there, waiting for them to become part of it.

Speaking as a 30-year Protestant, I disagree. They can and would admit that the church of the Apostles was the Catholic/Orthodox Church (there being no difference back in those days). They can and would admit that Peter was the first Roman pope, and that there is an unbroken line of Roman popes. Likewise there is an unbroken line of patriarchs of Moscow and Constantinople and Alexandria.

At the same time they would, and do, insist that the Catholic and Orthodox churches strayed outside the boundaries set by the Bible. By their view the Catholic and Orthodox churches today are not teaching what the united church taught back in the early centuries.
