If the atom exists, can it be detected?

Has anyone ever seen, touched, tasted, heard or smelled an atom?

This thread is just an idea.

This is serious, but not rude.

This is serious and fundamental.

I will read the thought, if any, and listen.

I am here to hear other people’s thoughts, ideas, opinions and feelings.

Let’s not pick nits. Referring to a basic entity in the singular is perfectly correct

And, yes we can detect them. They’ve even photographed them; using electron micrographs.

smell receptors in nose have a space in them wide enough for one atom. When a scent atom [part of a scent molecule] goes into the space in the receptor an electron from another atom on one side of the receptor can jump across the space through the scent atom to an atom on the other side of the receptor, thus completing an electric circuit and firing the nerve giving us the idea of a smell.

If your point is that people (including nonbelievers) take things other than God on faith, you’re right. I just don’t think the atom is a good example of that.
 
Smell works through nuerotransitter chemicals, not atoms (otherwise, we would only be able to smell conductive materials), but that’s beside the point here.

I think the OP is trying to make the point that we in modern society believe in something that we can’t detect through our unaided human senses, yet many do not also believe in God. Isn’t that right?

Actually, our noses sense molecules, not individual atoms. Most atoms we can breathe are odorless; with some exceptions, such as chlorine or iodine.

Also, ozone (O3) has a smell, normal oxygen (O2) does not, despite having the same type of atoms. The difference to our nose is the molecular bonding.

ahem… [part of a scent molecule] I wrote. Only one atom on the molecule will fit in the receptor, so they say.

I am asking for conscious awareness of an atom.

I own several cast iron (Fe) frying pans. They consist of Fe atoms. I see these items. I have touched these items. I have not attempted to taste them. Any smell eminating from them seems to be from extraneous sources, not the Fe atoms. I have not detected any sound coming from them.

It’s not stupid.

If you have ever “smelled the sea,” what you smelled was the atoms, or rather ions, of sodium and of chloride that evaporated into the air and reached your nose. Water, as such, has no smell. Sodium chloride is a solid and so normally cannot be smelled; but it exists in water as ions, atoms that have acquired electric charge. Some of which reach the human nose by evaporation.

Atoms are too small to see with the eyes, and they make no sound. So you should be asking about taste and smell, which are our bodies’ chemical senses.
