Then would it be appropriate for use at Mass?
I can understand people not liking it if a harmonica is playing blues, bends and rhythm during a sacred song. But if it is playing the vocal line, just accompanying the voices, it wouldn’t sound so bad. Harmonicas are often used to play religious music in that fashion (don’t know how popular they are with Catholics though) and some fellow parishioners told me their uncle used to play the songs at Mass on his harmonica, and the bishop didn’t seem to have a problem with it.
I ask because I was invited to play harmonica at youth Mass at a nearby parish.
Another question about musical instruments at Mass in general. If a Mass already has several instruments that aren’t generally considered appropriate, is it alright for someone else to add another instrument that doesn’t make the music sound any worse even if that instrument usually wouldn’t be good for Mass?
For example, bass is not usually considered appropriate for playing music at Mass. But if they already have a drummer at youth Mass, then adding a bass is probably just going to make the music sound better - it couldn’t make it any “worse” (in terms of sounding sacred) if you’ve already got drums destroying the atmosphere. So if a bassist was asked to join a liturgical music group that already has a drummer, can/should they accept?
