and so easily interpreted–and the Holy Spirt leads every Christian to interpret if for themselves, then why are there over 32,000 Prostestants denominations, and millions of indivodual Prostestants, all interpreting the Bible differently and Jesus started one Church.

Um, Bill, you see, um, if people wanted to follow the Church that Jesus started they might have to follow the rules and give up cheap sex and drugs, etc. So if the church is too strict, let’s just make our own.😃

All Catholics don’t agree on every issue, so why would non-Catholics? Believe it or not, some Catholics actually do think for themselves and don’t blindly follow whatever the Catholic Church teaches. You don’t consider dissenting Catholics a different denomination, do you?

Do you think using other’s disagreements are a justification of being divided? Scriptures tell us to be of the same mind and judgement; to be of the same accord. They also teach us to take note of those who create dissensions. But, it seems we can now say, oh, they have some imperfect people, so I can do whatever I want.

If we’re going to have a serious discussion, can we at least drop the 33,000 Protestant denomination myth that Tim Staples has been talking about? It’s nonsense.

The study that he was referring to spoke of 33,000 Christian denominations. This is significant because some 600 of them were within the Catholic and Orthodox Churches alone. The vast majority of the rest were Restorationist sects, not Protestant.

So your argument is against you.

That being said, I don’t believe in the nonsense that “Scripture interprets Scripture.” There is of course one way to interpret Scripture, and we must have Tradition.

The fact that you’ll recognize over 32,000 different denominations would indicate to me that you’ll know very well why there are so many. In actual fact the study or survey that determined this number counted the Catholic Church more than once. It counted it as one in each country where it existed. So lets say that while there are several major flavors of Baptists and some independents as well, there is a mis-perception because of the method of counting as to how many actually exist totally independent of one another. In actual fact, as I recall, there are something like 2000 different denominations of Christians on this planet. That is still a lot of disagreement. :)👍

Ok, let’s drop the 33,000 denominations. Let’s assume it’s only 3300. Is that acceptable? Scriptures teach us to be of the same mind and judgment; of the same accord. Christ prayed for His Apostles to be one, as He and the Father are one. There is nothing in scriptures that teach us, we only have to agree on ‘essentials’. Everything I see suggests ONE and the body of Christ cannot be divided. So tell me please, what do you see as an acceptable number?

There is the East and West Churches, that are Catholic. Don’t confuse rites with denominations. Catholic is not a denomination. All Christian faiths came through the Catholic Church.

The study that you Catholics always assert includes Catholicism as having “multiple” denominations.

We all would love to be united under one Church. But the fact that there is a Catholic Church and there are other denominations does not make the Roman Catholic Church “the” Church. That’s simply nonsense.

I do agree that believing in personal interpretation of scripture without ever looking back at thousands of years of tradition and precedence is dangerous. We must always look back to tradition.

That being said, I still disagree on certain dogmas the Catholic Church has established that it says is based on “Tradition.”

Ok, look at secular history and tell me which Churches have existed over the last 2000 years, trim it down to the first 500 years and tell me which ones you are willing to affliate yourself with? It doesn’t take Church history, even though the writings of the early Church fathers taught a doctrine much closer to the Catholic Church than any other Church out there, with the exception of maybe the Orthodox.

And you disagree based on what? Because you don’t agree with the interpretation, plus tradition, the teaching comes from?

I am one of those!

tweetymom, you believe in private interpretation of scriptures, with Holy Spirit guidance, please share your interpretation of the scripture below. One is from the Douay-Rheims and the other is a King James Version.

**Rom 16:17 Now I beseech you, brethren, to mark them who make dissensions and offences contrary to the doctrine which you have learned and avoid them.

(KJVA) Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.**
