Let’s say that for some reason, all electronics, batteries, and satellite transmissions stopped working – so there would be no TV, computers, cell phones, I Pods, Kindles, etc.
  1. If you could have only 5 books in your home to read, what would those 5 books be?
  2. Are those 5 books in your home right now?
    If not, why not?

:DFirst I need to know if the navarre bible set counts as ONE book?

If? IF??? IF???

Sugar, my power WAS out from Thursday at 5 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. THIS morning. C-ville had what it SAID was a ‘microburst’ but what I say was a mini cyclone. . .nearly pulled my LOCKED door off its hinges and took down tons of trees and power lines. . .

Let’s see. What did I read. . .by lantern and ‘natural’ daylight?

"Hail Holy Queen "(Scott Hahn)
Usual LOTH.
Hillaire Belloc’s "Characters of the Reformation’.
And Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy.
I know it seems like a lot but I am a very fast reader.

And I have to confess I also did some knitting because that really relaxes me and when you’re doing a simple little old hat you don’t really even need to look at the knitting, anyway not until you’re doing the decrease rounds at the top and need to count stitches.

I went to Mass last night because I knew if the power went on today I would have to walk to the grocery store and get a few groceries since everything in my fridge had died (not that there was much anyway but even so!) and it’s already hot. Left the house at 8 and got back about 15 minutes ago.

I had the Silmarillion set aside for today if the power hadn’t come back. But I am so glad it did!!!

So let’s see: I would definitely keep the Bible as #1, the LOTH as #2, let me count the Lord of the Ring triology as 1 book to make #3, and then hmmm, Probably my complete set of Jane Austen (it’s all in one book so that makes #4!) and finally, my complete set of Wm. Shakespeare, also all in one book so that makes #5!

The Bible
1984 by Orwell
We by Zamyatin
Complete Works of William Shakespeare
With Lawrence in Arabia by Lowell Thomas

Yes - all in are my home.

Depends, is this more of a short term power outage or a long term one?

If it is short term, I’d want the book I’m reading now, Collapse by Jared Diamond, and the next four books in my two be read pile, A Schoolteacher in Old Alaska: The Story of Hannah Breece, The Know-It-All, Ellis Island Interviews: Immigrants Tell Their Stories In Their Own Words, and The Price of Stones: Building a School for My Village.

If this is more of a long term thing, I’d take a couple of those out and add the Bible and the Catechism since those are nice and long.

And yes, I have all of these in my house right now. I just got a whole stack from Amazon impatiently waiting for me to finish the book I’m on so I can start one of my new ones. 😃

  1. Ignatius Bible
  2. Liturgy of the Hours
  3. Screwtape Letters
  4. the latest Dean Koontz
  5. collected works of St. Teresa of Jesus, any volume
Yes, they’re all here. Great question!

  1. The Bible (definitely a must)
  2. The Lord of the Rings trilogy (counting the 3 as one book) by JRR Tolkein
  3. The Sword of Truth series (also counting as one book) by Terry Goodkind
  4. The Catechism of the Catholic Church
  5. The Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

  1. The Bible
  2. Catechism of the Catholic Church
  3. Lambs Supper by Scott Hahn
  4. Collection of Sherlock Holmes
  5. Reasons to Believe by Scott Hahn
I’m newly coming back…and yes…all these are in my house!

  1. A practical guide to generator construction and utilization.
  2. The Bible
  3. Orthodoxy
  4. The Lord of the Rings
  5. A practical guide to surviving in a non-electric world.
Cheers,

As with most of us, I’d have to say the Bible as my first pick. For the second it’s a toss up between the Liturgy of the Hours and the Catechism. Probably the Catechism, as the Psalms and readings of LOTH are already in the Bible.

Complete works of Jane Austen. Complete works of William Shakespeare. Two easy picks. (Don’t have all the works of either author, but I’m working on it!)

And the fifth? Definitely something VERY long and VERY Russian to keep me occupied for a while. But which book? War and Peace? Crime and Punishment? Anna Karenina? I’m ploughing through The Brothers Karamazov at the moment, so if it happened now I’d have to take it just to see how it finishes 🙂

The same ones I read with power on:
Gospels
LOTR
HP
Dean Koontz
Mary Stewart

Of course they’re in my home right now. Why would they not be? My house is filled with books.

WELL FIRST, pick up a copy from your shelves of the boy scout handbook…this will give yoiu faith, hope and knowledge in surviving this blackout!..then read Bunyons Pilgrims Progress…TRs childrens favorite book! Then a book like about world war 2 concentration camps…this will relax you a bit and you will then not feel so much self pity! Remember that ole saying…light one candle…well go for it…they really work!..When one is without external entertainment one has to look within to find it…its soooo sad the recent generations have so little creativity…they just turn on and sit back and munch, get fat on food and stay thin on common sense…Pas

How could you read anything in the dark??

if the power went out i would read:
  1. the light that failed by thomas edison
  2. heart of darkness by joseph conrad

Interesting thread. So many different answers, I was actually surprised to see LOTR mentioned here so often.

I guess my list would be short:
  1. The Bible
  2. Catechism of the Catholic Church
  3. Spiritual Combat by Lorenzo Scupoli
All 3 are not only in my house, but on my desk.

  1. The Bible
  2. The LOTH
  3. The CCC
  4. The Imitation of Christ
  5. The Way, by St. Josemaria Escriva
I have them all, thankfully. 🙂

Well, for starters, I would like to finish the two books that I am reading at present: the Orthodox Study Bible and Cardinal H.E. Manning’s The Temporal Mission of the Holy Ghost. Both are superb!

Pax, Jerry Parker

Plus right now it’s summer here --15 plus hours of daylight! Though when it was 90 plus degrees with no power it’s not like I WANTED to open up the curtains to let the sunshine in!

My top 5 books would be
  1. The Bible
  2. Catechism of Catholic Church
  3. The Imitation of Christ
  4. “He and I” by Gabrielle Bossis
  5. A good family saga taken out from the library, by authors such as Lyn Andrews or Helen Forrester (or a good Enid Blyton Famous Five would do if I am unable to get to the library! :p)
