If the whole world was of one religion would this be good or bad?

It would certainly stop religious wars…until a fracture/schism happened, and then the wars would start again. There would probably be a lot fewer though.

On the other hand, there would be a lot fewer ideas, and a lot of world culture would be lost. So I don’t really know.

At a fundamental level there is only ONE religion- renunciation, non-selfhood. It is the highest ethic of Christianity, Buddhism, Islam and Taoism.

To find truth, we must seek to cease cherishing expressions of truth.

Yet, if all the world adopted one religion, it would necessarily be a stupid religion- something like American Evangelical Protestantism. Whatever the many believe is, by its very nature, wrong. The path found by the many is that which leads unto perdition, for the many remain enslaved to the world, the flesh, to concepts, to words…

If you united all the world in one religion- within 24 hours there would be divisions. It will never happen, except by force, and not even then.

Are you implying that the only reason Catholicism purged a good amount of its corruption during the Middle Ages was because they lost the monopoly on what the “Truth” in Europe was?

Renunciation and non-selfhood is not the highest ethic, or an ethic at all, of Judaism. This is one of the major differences between Judaism and Buddhism.
 
Thrre is only one religion in heaven, of those who stand before God. Of course this is not bad. So the simple fact of everyone having one religion need not be wrong, by the very fact of there being one religion.
This may be impossible among living men. But this is a different question, different from the question asked in the opening post.

Do you all not know that we are destined for this? Jesus Christ will reign over the earth for 1,000 years. What do you think the only religion will be then?

Here’s a hint: it would be One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic
 
I’m not sure if it’s necessary, or even best for people. We’ve accomplished some major achievements through unified mass movements, and we would accomplish even more if we realised, or cared more about, our ability to affect history and make a unified commitment to change it for the better. But those unified mass movements come out of dissenting or alternative views, and there are divisions even within those movements.
 
Theoretically, God could be doing a lot more to reduce the number of religions in the world, but He isn’t. For example, he could appear before every Muslim and show them compelling evidence that Jesus was God incarnate, not just a prophet. Yet, again, He doesn’t do this. I will also say, in advance, that I reject the claim that God cannot provide more evidence if He wished to, that’s just plain silly! He wouldn’t be “interfering with free will” by sharing the gospel with those who haven’t been exposed to it, for example.

So perhaps there is a reason why He does not?

Would there still be a Pope at that point or would Jesus’ presence render the position unneeded?
 
I’ll add to those saying ‘it depends’ by making it into a list.
  1. Depends on said religion
  2. Depends on whether the religion is enforced simply down on the basic levels of philosophy, morality, and ethics or does it extend beyond that
  3. Depends on its vulnerability/immunity to corruption
  4. Depends on its means of conversion
  5. Depends on its means of retaining the whole world in fidelity to it
 
That was my thought too. The world will eventually be one religion under Jesus Christ.
 
The situation would be awful.

Theocracies are not good for civil rights and personal freedom - a totalitarian theocracy would have neither limits nor boundries, and force even the most willing victims to live on their knees.

Obviously, this would not apply if Jesus was with us in the flesh!
