That’s my opinion anyway. Of course there are some exceptions. I can think of some brave politicians for instance who don’t care about popularity and seem to have huge amounts of integrity.
But of course it does run counter to John 15:18.
My experience of being hated as I reflect on my past was deserved. I was a teacher many years ago. I was a strange combination of control freak and people/child pleaser. Most kids didn’t like me nor enjoy my class and I don’t blame them. My confidence/self-esteem ranged from non-existent to average. I was a bore. Some other teachers were very popular and I could fully understand why. Enthusiastic, strong presence, they loved teaching and it showed. My mistake was probably choosing teaching as a career in the first place.
But don’t you think those that are hated in this world usually deserve it?

Your honor, that requires a conclusion from the witness.

We are asked not to judge, so I’d rather not speculate on who “deserves” what.

There are definitely people in teaching whose talents and temperament are better-suited to a different job. There is nothing wrong with that.
Many people who are well-loved by those close to them deserve it, but I think the Lord was saying that there are people in this world whom you cannot please without a violation in integrity or a betrayal of your duty to the commandments.
There are also people who serve people who aren’t going to appreciate them and how much they had to be willing to be disliked in order to give what was needed most until a lot of time has gone by and maybe there is no chance to say, “thanks.” They will have their rewards from the Father.
In the end, though: no, if people deserved to be hated, then there would be a commandment to hate your enemies. The commandment is, instead, to love your enemies, coupled with the observation that even nonbelievers love those who do good to them. That seems to say that nobody ought to be hated.

The world hated Jesus, He didn’t deserve it. And a big chunk of the world still hates Jesus.
A big chunk of the world still hates Hitler. Our Lord said love your enemies, though. If you consent to be ransomed from death from the God who insists on loving, that’s what you get to do. That’s where life is, not in enmity.

Sometimes you are hated because of things outside of your control like skin color…

I wont be responding to any flaming by the way. I’m just stating from my experience that when you love the world, the world loves you back. Not always but a lot of the time.

OK, but what’s that have to do with Jesus? The OP said:

I don’t think that statement is necessarily true… I think some people are hated and deserve it (like Hitler) but others do not.

I think one of the big issues with today’s society is that too many people are worried about being liked. For example: parents/teachers worrying about being liked by their children/students. Bishops/priests worrying about being liked by their flock. Elected officials worrying about being liked by their voters. Teens worrying about being liked by their peers.

It’s not that wanting to being liked is a bad thing. But when it keeps us from doing the right thing, it is. Somethings doing the right thing means you will not be liked or even hated.

So yes, I disagree with the statement “If the world hates you, you probably deserve it.” I think a better statement would be, “if the world hates you, take a hard look in the mirror.”

God bless

Why dwell on it. You can’t change the past. But tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life.

Make the effort to become a better more positive person.

If this thread can promote discussion of the original Gospel verse, good. “If the world hated you, remember that it hated me first.” He wanted to encourage those that were being persecuted for following him, to my knowledge.
If in this modern day, you are being persecuted for being Christian, then no, you don’t deserve it. But if you feel the world isn’t loving you enough, shouldn’t you be asking yourself: “How am I coming across? Maybe it is my fault.”

He’s been around a while so I would think there are others. I’ve watched him for over a decade…he was just a wee bee then.

The ironic thing is that I was introduced to him by a TLM, then borderline-sede, friend - BlimeyCow being a snarky, Southern evangelical hahaha
